As we continue pay tribute to all the mothers out there the article below is a very touching one, written by Gabe Hamda, ICATT President.

What is one word that best describes your mom and why? Celebrating Mothers Releases So Much Positive Energy in All of Us. Gabe Hamda (He, Him, His), PhD, SPHR

Please answer the following reflective question “What is one word that best describes your mom and why?” Let me encourage you to take the following radical actions: (1) use this reflective question as a discussion sharing topic for story telling of memories during your mothers celebration gathering, and (2) post your response on your social media post as your tribute to your mom. I know you can do this. Let’s pack social media with kind words for one day.

Here is my tribute to my mom. The one word that best describes my mom is “gowa” This is a unique nickname I gave my mom. In Oromiffa language (one of the languages in Ethiopia) “gowa” loosely means “the foolish one” I believe I was the only one among my siblings to call my mom “gowa” “the foolish one.” In my reflections, I was reluctant to reveal this as one word to describe my mom because it does not sound like a nice thing to say about your mom.

I am an ardent believer in “our instincts are always right even when we are very young and very inexperienced”. As I reflect back into my childhood instincts, calling my mom “gowa” meant she always believed in my decency despite the fact I was a mischievous little boy. As a little child, I was widely known as a troublemaker – doing what I was not supposed to do and saying what I was not supposed to say. Yet my mom never picked that up and always believed in me as a decent child. While the troublemaker in me lives on, I inherited from my mom a belief in the decency of all humanity, regardless of the external labels. Happy Mother’s Day to all moms, who continue to raise generations of decent sons and daughters.
