Welcome everyone!
Here we are starting a new year together! I am so happy to be preparing classes and programming a very exciting year ahead. In about a week we will be together again as our in-person group classes begin. After such hard years, we are still healing but moving forward.
This will be a year to be able to bring music back beyond our own community and share what we do with our friends and relatives even more than last year.

I hope you are as excited as I am.
See you very soon!!!

A message from the Board

Cool fall weather, leaves changing color, the anticipation of the Thanksgiving long weekend, and the sound of young students practicing their music! These are just some of the things that we can look forward to with the start of the fall season. I would like to welcome all students, both new and returning, as well as some new faculty members, to the SuzukiMusic school where we will hopefully be back in person at Canterbury school! On behalf of the board of directors, welcome back to our ever wonderful school of music! Change those strings and tune them up, brush off the dust and let's make some music together!

President of the Board

This is a wonderful opportunity for students to see their teachers in action. We hope to see many SuzukiMusic families and friends of SuzukiMusic at this special event!
Welcome to our New Faculty!
We welcome Ursa Meyer and Erik Johnson-Scherger to our Violin/Viola Faculty! As well as teaching in their private studios Ursa will be teaching our Headstart Class and Erik will be teaching Group Classes.
Birch Bark Coffee at Group Classes
We will be selling Birch Bark Coffee at our group classes this year. You will be able to find bags of Birch Bark Coffee for sale at our Snack/Coffee Table in the Main Lobby of Canterbury HS every group class Saturday. As well as supporting our school, 1$ of every bag sold goes towards the purchase of clean water systems for First Nations Communities.
SAO Conference - Student Day!
The Suzuki Association of Ontario 2022 Conference will be held LIVE in beautiful Kingston, Ontario, on November 12, 2022. Group classes have not been scheduled for that Saturday so that as many of our SuzukiMusic students as possible can attend this energizing and inspiring one day event.

The Suzuki Association of Ontario Conference Student Day is a wonderful opportunity to play with other Suzuki students and experienced clinicians.
The instrument faculty for Student Day will include Melanie Grenier (Violin), Carrie Reuning-Hummel (Violin), David Evenchick (Cello), and Gail Lange (Piano).

Student Day will be full of energizing group classes for string students, and inspiring masterclasses for piano students, with a parent talk, as well as student enrichment that is sure to enlighten all Suzuki families.

Headstart 2022-2023
Term One Headstart is full! If you have a preschooler or have friends with preschoolers who are interested in Headstart, email Liko at [email protected] to register for available spots in term 2 and 3 and/or to get on the waiting list. Headstart is a great introduction to music and the Suzuki philosophy before starting music lessons. Check out the website for more information at https://suzukimusic.ca/headstart/
Giving through the
United Way/GCWCC Campaign
The Government of Canada Workplace Charity Campaign(GCWCC)  is on now and is a great way for SuzukiMusic members and friends who are Public Servants to support our school.

Through the GCWCC, public servants can support any registered Canadian charity of their choosing, including our school. Our special thanks to those of you who have chosen to direct your donations toward SuzukiMusic. This year any donations will go first to supplying our group class classrooms with air filters.

Parent Education Corner
Off to a Great Start

by Judy Olmstead-O'Regan

One month down since school/work has begun and I can see that students are beginning to get into a routine. For many of you, the routine has changed from last year and some are busier.

Here are a few tips to stay on track:

1. Sit down with your child and the family calendar to plot out how and when practice will happen. Parents are responsible for holding students to that schedule.

Practice does not have to happen in one block of time. Older students can take breaks from homework and do 1 practice point per break.

3. Read or make sure your child receives their practice notes and uses them for every practice. Most kids will grab the instrument and start sawing away! That’s fine, as long as the notes are eventually consulted.

4. Listening to the repertoire will reduce the time it takes to learn a piece. Hearing the recordings falls on parents to make it happen. Having a personal listening device does not guarantee your child is listening to their recordings!
Travel/commute time is great for listening.

5. Review - With group classes beginning, it is assumed that students can play all of their repertoire. Don’t panic….make sure you are blasting it at home and choose a few pieces each week to bring back. Once group classes are in full swing, you will receive a list of pieces to work on with your class.

Help your child become comfortable playing in their group class by making a friend. Go for pizza after group class or plan a play-date.

The social aspect of playing music together is one of the main reasons kids stay with their instruments. It’s fun!

6. Keep your eyes on the Suzuki Calendar and plan to attend all events. Preparing for concerts and recitals is one of the best ways to keep kids motivated and enjoying their musical journey. Imagine a hockey team that practices without playing games!!! Would your child want to join?

Events to look forward to:

Faculty Benefit Concert - Hear your teachers play
Play-In- meet and play with all students in our program
December Recital - choose your favourite piece and perform it
Family and Friends Concert - call a friend or grab a family member; choose a piece and play it for us
VIVA Suzuki - play on stage with over 50 musicians at once! What a sound!
Spring Recital - a time to celebrate your progress this school year.

7. Your Equipment - Keep your instrument in top shape and all other necessary equipment at hand. Having an extra set of strings, for string players, is a good idea. Strings can break at any time.

8. Keep the Suzuki Triangle( Parent-Teacher-Student) healthy by keeping the lines of communication open with your teacher. Contact them with concerns when they arise.

Have a wonderful year!
