Highlighting local species

Red Headed Woodpecker

We are going to showcase some of our favorite local bird species here to pass along fun facts and grow appreciation of the iconic birds we are lucky to share this region with.

This month our species highlight is the Red Headed Woodpecker! One of the most striking birds we have in the area, Red-headed Woodpeckers are residents of pine savannas and woody swamps. They can be spotted at some favorite local birding spots like Burnt Mill Creek or Carolina Beach State Park. According to Cornell's All About Birds, "The Red-headed Woodpecker was the “spark bird” of legendary ornithologist Alexander Wilson in the 1700s." That's a pretty cool fact!
