Renee Sewell '12, of Estée Lauder keynotes National Honor Society Induction Ceremonies

Renee Sewell '12, presidential management associate at Estée Lauder, gave the keynote address at the Honor Societies Induction Ceremony on April 25, addressing over 100 honorees and guests.

Students were inducted into the National Honor Society, the National Honor Societies for English and Spanish, Rho Kappa (social studies) Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society, and the Beta Honor Society.

A graduate of Boston University and Columbia University Business School, Renee began her address saying, "Each one of you stands at the starting point of an expedition which we call life. Your rights to blame your teachers, parents, and neighbors have just expired. You are now fully responsible for the quality of your life. This quality does not depend on what you have but how you live. How you leave spaces better than how you found it - how you leave your mark."

Shen Yun Performance shares traditional Chinese music and dancing

SCA students continue to experience other cultures with the support of the grant from the Sisters of Mercy Ministry Fund, Growing in Interculturality. They recently attended a Shen Yun Performance at the David Koch Theatre.

Established in New York in 2006, Shen Yun Performing Arts is the world's premier classical Chinese dance and music company. It performs classical Chinese dance, ethnic and folk dance, and story-based dance, with orchestral accompaniment and solo performers. Shen Yun, or 神韻, can be translated as: “The beauty of divine beings dancing.”

Drone Team takes first place in competition at Vaughn College

SCA's Drone Team took first place in a drone scrimmage on Drone Day at Vaughn College on April 19. Students participated in workshops on how to build their drones from scratch before testing out their creations on a simulator (see video) and then actually flying in the pit annex. Their victory was based on overall performance throughout the day.

Jasmine C. '24, who will be studying computer science at the University of Southern California, took the helm in one of the simulations to "fly" the drone through a series of barriers.

Brianna R. '24 named NHS

Scholarship National Semifinalist

As a National Semi-Finalist, Brianna R. '24 was awarded $3,200 by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the parent organization of NHS.

"I was surprised and very honored," said Brianna. "I am always looking for outside scholarships so I thought I might as well apply." Brianna is one of only 600 recipients around the country to receive this scholarship. She currently serves as the president of the National Honor Society chapter at St. Catharine Academy.

Accepted to a number of prestigious colleges including Harvey Mudd College and Northeastern University, Brianna will attend Georgetown University majoring in computer science.

"Getting into Georgetown felt surreal!" she said. "The acceptance letter said I was one in 1600 to get accepted out of 26,200 and that made me feel so incredibly proud of myself. I hadn’t really fully envisioned myself attending there, but then I went to their Admitted Students Weekend and absolutely fell in love with the school."

When asked why she thinks she is doing so well with her college and scholarship applications, Brianna credited the challenging classes and supportive teachers at St. Catharine's.
