Northwest ISD families,
It is truly an exciting time to be in Northwest ISD. In visiting our schools, I have the opportunity to see the sheer excitement our kids have for learning, share in the celebrations of student success, and experience the unique campus events that exemplify each school’s amazing culture. I enjoy seeing our teachers and staff in action and how they build up kids, support student learning, and share their love of learning. Great things are happening in Northwest ISD schools.
As our schools celebrated Veterans Day today, it was a joy and privilege to honor and recognize so many of our veterans across the district. I want to personally thank our veterans for their service and for providing us with a wonderful example of duty, respect, and leadership. Through your participation in our school celebrations, you provided us an avenue to teach our students about our armed forces, our government, and civic duty.
Providing a free public education remains one of the greatest Constitutional duties of our great state. However, as you may have heard, public education remains at the forefront of one of the biggest political debates in Texas’ history. After legislation supporting private school vouchers once again failed to pass, Governor Abbott called an immediate Fourth Special Session to take up the topic once again.
As I shared before, I steadfastly oppose private school vouchers and Education Savings Accounts where there is no public accountability for public tax dollars. I do not support what appears to be a political tradeoff to offer an increase in public school funding in exchange for private school vouchers.
I’ve already heard from a few of our local legislators that they are hearing from our NISD staff and community, so community input supporting public education has been noticed. It is my hope that our legislators recognize the need to adequately fund our schools and compensate our staff without the political push for private school vouchers.
I encourage you to once again contact your legislators as the House considers House Bill 1, a newly filed, multifaceted education bill that combines Education Savings Accounts and many other education issues. You can help us by contacting your legislators and encouraging them to honor and support public education.
As always, your support of our students and schools is appreciated.
Sincerely,
Mark Foust, Ed.D.
Superintendent, Northwest ISD
