WVNCC Celebrates Black History Month: Three Pioneering African Americans Who Changed Wheeling

This week, we shine a spotlight on the rich and varied history of African American contributions to the Wheeling Area.

Join us as we recognize the legacy of three remarkable public service figures who not only molded the landscape of Wheeling, but also left an incredible mark on our community.

Colonel Bill Turner: Known as Wheeling’s First Black Police Officer along with being a Republican Party activist, baseball player, musician and member of several fraternal societies.

Ann Thomas: A pioneering community leader and First African American to graduate Ohio Valley General Hospital’s School of Nursing.

Clyde Thomas: An all-state athlete in basketball and football at Bellaire High School, an All-American college football player for Ohio University, a halfback for the Wheeling Ironmen, and former Wheeling City Councilman and vice mayor who helped get the Wheeling Civic Center built.

WVNCC’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee is pleased to share these and other resources throughout February.

Financial Aid Announcements

First Refund Day is Thursday, February 22

The first refund day of the semester is Thursday, February 22, 2024. BankMobile will be utilized again based on the account settings that you created prior or will need to create.

Watch this video tutorial to assist in the process.

Why does my refund amount look different than what I was expecting? This could be the result of several scenarios:

  • You have a class with a late start. These courses cause delays in disbursement as Financial Aid is required to verify your attendance before the funds are released.
  • Your refund only contains a portion of your loan amounts due to a split disbursement process. Pending full-time enrollment, these will be sent to you later in the semester.
  • Something may be missing. Checking your NOW account, Northern email, and completing requirements in a timely manner are critical to receiving the funds you expect.

Please feel free to reach out to the Service Center at your respective campus or email financialaidoffice@wvncc.edu with any questions.

During these exceptionally busy times, please allow 24-48 hours for a response.

4 Tips To Consider Before Spending Your Financial Aid Refund

So, you have just received your refund check or deposit. Your eyes light up with glee as you think about all the stuff you can buy with your money.

Here are some things you might want to consider before going on a shopping spree, keeping in mind all federal aid is intended to be used for educational purposes.

1. Pay down your loans. Yes. You can start paying on your loans early and avoid accruing interest payments. Remember, it’s not free money if it is borrowed money.

2. Save it for emergency college costs. Laptops break. Books may need to be purchased or replaced.

3. Apply it to rent and utilities. Food and stable shelter are basic needs. Consider using your loan to supplement paying your rent, electricity, gas and groceries.

4. Use it for transportation costs. Getting to and from on-campus classes can be an issue for some students. The extra funds may help solve this problem.

If you need help creating a budget, contact the Financial Aid office and schedule an appointment. We are more than happy to assist you.
