Why We Love This Place Wednesday:

Lassen Cougar Playoff Baseball

By Terra Avilla

The best part of writing for Susanville Stuff is that my wonderful boss (Jeremy) pretty much lets me write about whatever I want. So, this week, I am going to utilize this great perk of this gig and write about something that I just can’t help but want to share with you all.

Our Lassen College Baseball team has not only made it to playoffs, but we have ranked high enough for the first time in 20 years to host a playoff game at home.

Life in the Avilla household has been good this week. Busy but good. I have attached a little blurb from the head Skipper of this club, you all may know him as my better half, Coach Frank Avilla.

“This spring was a hard-fought season that involved many weekends that were affected due to weather and a ridiculous amount of travel. Every week our hustlin’ Cougs handled adversity chasing a GVC championship. We sat atop the GVC leader board occupying first place for all the season until the final week when we fell short.

“Our student athletes’ efforts and commitment over the last 16 weeks has landed them as the #9 ranked team in all of Northern California out of 42 community colleges. Our overall win/ loss record was 25-13 and 17-8 in GVC conference play. What this means is that for the first time in twenty years our baseball team will host the opening round of the State Northern California Regionals. We will be matched up against #16 seed College of Marin from the Bay Valley Conference.

“To help to get this team in shape and ready to play at home has been a tremendous team effort. Our coaching staff has been working like crazy physically and mentally preparing them to compete at this level. Coach Tyler Roper, new to the club this year, has been a crucial part in helping get our catchers where they need to be.

“Local heroes Casey Lee (yes, you know him – he is the president of Susanville Little League) has done tremendous work with our outfielders. Coach Scott Foreman is also a well-known name in our local baseball community due and you can catch that fella as one of our third base coaches. The addition of coaching pitch Mitch Lively has been wonderful this year as he and Donald Wanner help make sure our bull pen is ready to go.

“And then of course there is John Deal… who, well… if you know good ole JD… you know he is being “JD” which is quite literally enough.

“And of course there are the boys. These wonderful, talented, silly boys. From all over the country and if you catch a game this weekend, you might even be able to see our Aussie on the mound. They deserve the world and I hope and am asking our community to come out to support them.”

Obviously, the love that my family, (all five of us) have for these young men, is undeniable. They are just wonderful humans, come out and catch this historic baseball series and you will see why they are 46 reasons I love where we live.

Cougar playoff games at Memorial Park's Frank Ernaga Field are scheduled for Thursday at 4:00p.m. and Friday at 11:00a.m. Visit LCC Baseball online or on Facebook to find out details.

Lassen High Baseball Raising

Money to Fund Program

Lassen High School Head Baseball Coach Eric Perry is reaching out to community residents, asking for help funding the school’s baseball program.

“We are currently running a fundraiser to help raise money and to ensure we have a successful season,” explains Perry.

“The last couple of years have been tough for fundraising and have depleted our funds in our baseball program. We need your help to continue to improve our program.”

The donations will be used for uniforms, travel costs and equipment.

“We are looking to our families, friends, and community for help. Please take five minutes and donate whatever you can; even the smallest donation makes a difference.”

Each participant has an individual goal of raising $350 for the fundraiser.

Susanville Fire Department Sets Weed Abatement Deadline for June 24th

The Susanville Fire Department is reminding city residents that the Weed Abatement deadline is next Monday, June 24th, 2024 for removal of weeds and fire hazards.

“We are asking that all hazards be mitigated before the deadline,” explains Assistant Fire Chief Tom Hernandez. “The following Weed Abatement Standards are designed to assist firefighting efforts by, prevention of, or slowing the spread of fire.”

According to Hernandez the Susanville Fire Department has the final decision in determining whether an area is ‘safe from the spread of fire’ and conforms to the intent of the code.

The applicable City Code Section, 8.28.030, says that, “It is unlawful for the owner, agent, lessee or other person having charge or control of any piece or parcel of land within the city to allow weeds or rubbish to grow, or to remain thereon, or upon the street or sidewalk in front of such piece or parcel of land.”

Weeds, grass, or other combustible growth may be abated by mowing, disking, or scraping. If mowed the combustible growth must be cut and maintained to a maximum height of 4 inches.

All hazards must be mitigated prior to the June 26th, deadline and abatement by open burning is not permitted.

Guidelines for removal of hazards on all properties within the city:

  • Mow or disk space around all buildings 30 feet wide at minimum.
  • Mow or disk space 50 ft. wide minimum completely around the perimeter of the property to the street or sidewalk. Mow or disk 30 ft. wide minimum cross-breaks every 50 ft. maximum, (property can be completely mowed or disked in lieu of cross-breaks.)
  • Mow or disk space extending 30 ft. minimum beyond the foliage of any group of trees.
  • All rubbish, trash, trimmings, rubble or litter shall be removed from the property.
  • All woods, fuel, or lumber shall be neatly stacked or removed from the property.
  • All weeds, grass, or other combustible growth shall be cleared at least 10 ft. from around any combustible storage.
  • Greenbelt, pastures, and environmentally-sensitive areas shall be assessed on an individual basis. Contact the fire department if you believe that this applies to your property.
  • Mow or disk space may be required to be larger if a potential fire hazard exists.
  • Remove down branches from trees and trim lower branches up to 6 ft. from the ground or 1/3 the height for smaller trees.

For more information regarding the Susanville Weed Abatement Program please contact Assistant Chief Tom Hernandez at 530-257-5152.

Lassen School Resumes Work

Susanville Students Return to Classes As Peace Reigns

May 1, 1937

All was quiet on the Lassen county union high school and junior college front today, with students attending a full day of classes for the first time since Tuesday.

Threats of a permanent school strike over possible retention of six teachers on the school force were dispelled yesterday following a mass student meeting at which all surplus “steam” was “blown off” by the students.

A project vote by the students to determine sentiment regarding backing up charges filed against the six instructors by the county school board with the state department of education has been definitely called off, leaders requested.

The meeting ended yesterday at the request of Principal I. V. Funderbaugh, whose resignation touched off a flurry of trouble.

During the meeting two interested parents appeared before the students. The parents were Mrs. E. L. Thornburn and Mrs. J. V. Baker, instead of Mrs. A. E. Baker as previously reported.
