From Mr. Kigeya

Hello Regent scholars,

I hope this message finds you well.  Here are all the latest updates for the second week in December.

Last week I sent a video message outlining many of our West priority areas for the month. Linked here is the video for your review.  December Regent Reporter video message.

Continuous improvement at Madison West is something we aspire to.  At West, rigorous instruction that pushes our thinking and adds depth to our knowledge is our work.  The foundation for that work lies in our equity vision statement (linked here).  As a Regent, it is not enough for us to just learn skills, our purpose must extend beyond that. The impact on people and the communities we live in is our end game. That is the legacy of Madison West scholars.

That “practice” of that work begins here and now.

Things to consider:

  • We are an institution that is inclusive of all the students and staff.  That means hate has no place here and we reject all forms of racism, bigotry and discrimination. Recently, we have seen racists and bigoted language sprawled on our bathroom walls. As a school community we have to stand against this because it goes against what we stand for.

  • This year our custodial team is short staffed.  As such, we need to pay extra attention to how we carry ourselves in our community.  The custodial team needs help keeping our bathrooms and hallways clean.  So please be mindful of where you're throwing your trash and take time to pick something up even if it’s not yours.

  • Winter sports and co-curriculars are up and running.  When in attendance the WIAA as a code of conduct we must adhere to.  As noted above, at West we vigorously cheer on our student athletes and refrain from hateful and disrespectful language towards our opponents.

  • On Friday we will have a lockdown drill.  You and your families have received communication around this mandatory training.  This drill is to ensure your (and ours) safety should we confront a real threat in our school.  Please take this training seriously.  For those that may be triggered or anxious, please let us know and we’ll assist you.

Take care and be well.

Best,

Dan K

Seniors - Cap/Gown Orders!

Hey Seniors! Graduation Packets will be available in SLC offices beginning Wednesday, November 30th, 2022. These packets contain information from Midwest Scholastic with a catalog and order form for graduation caps, gowns, tassels and other Class of 2023 apparel including class rings. Online orders are preferred and can be made at https://www.mwscholastic.com/2023-west-store. Orders will be available for pick-up late in late April/early May. Payments must be made directly to Midwest Scholastic, West High School will NOT accept payments. ALL CAP/GOWN ORDER QUESTIONS SHOULD BE ADDRESSED DIRECTLY TO MIDWEST SCHOLASTIC at [email protected].

Last Call for Yearbook Orders!

It's time to make sure that you have a yearbook purchased for the 2022-2023 school year. All pre-orders need to happen by January 10th.

How do you know you have a book?

  1. Log into Infinite Campus
  2. Click on Fees to the left
  3. Filter by School Year : 2022-2023
  4. Filter by Paid
  • See fee titled "06OPT Yrbk West" with a $0.00 balance? You have one reserved!
  • Not Showing any fee titled "06OPT Yrbk West"? You do not have one reserved. If this is the case and you'd like to reserve one, please email your SLC secretary to have them add the fee and then you will be able to pay the fee and reserve one.

Any unpaid yearbook fees after January 10th will be dropped and you unfortunately will not have a yearbook reserved at the end of the year. Take a second to check today to avoid panic when it's too late!

Construction Update

Although the weather is getting colder, that hasn’t stopped construction at West High School from continuing to make great progress. There are currently three large cranes onsite, all being used for different parts of the construction project.

  • A 90-ton crane is setting the steel in place for the new pool area.
  • A 200-ton crane is moving masonry materials to the new gym space.
  • A 250-ton crane is setting the steel in the courtyard by transporting steel bundles over the building.

The steel structure for the interior courtyard addition is complete, which will eventually be a new corridor from the auditorium to Stevens gym

Wrapping up the interior phase of work

This week marked the completion of the first-floor locker rooms and the third-floor science classroom renovations. As construction crews are wrapping up other outstanding items on the interior, school staff will begin to move into the newly completed spaces. Next, workers will start building new temporary walls to separate spaces for the next phase of construction, which includes renovations to additional classrooms and office spaces in the south portion of the third floor.

Locker rooms are complete on the first floor below Stevens gym

Masons have started installing concrete masonry unit (CMU) block walls on the new gym space

The four new ADA-accessible restrooms and shower rooms in the new locker room spaces are complete

Operators use a 250-ton crane to set the steel in place for the new courtyard addition
