Artists and Scholars Showcase Their Best Work

Outstanding work and achievements of Reinhardt University students filled the Hill Freeman Library and Falany Performing Arts Center this week during the annual Robert L. Driscoll Convocation of Artists and Scholars. Selected by professors and deans, students across all disciplines enthusiastically shared knowledge and talents at the two-day event.

Christopher Walker’s (RU – 2024) presentation, “No Bridge Too Far,” explained how a donation became an engaging experience. A packed room listened intently as he explained his archival work during an internship with the Reinhardt Office of Advancement. Walker examined and organized the George Fitts Photograph Collection, a generous donation featuring Fitts’ photography that documents his research of covered bridges, mills, and water wheels.

A Celebration of Cultures

The annual International Culture Festival showcases the vast array of students from around the world who studied at Reinhardt University. On April 4, over 50 informational exhibits displayed the countries from which they have come. Fifty-seven current international students from 22 countries revamped showcases to accurately represent their backgrounds. Students representing a country for the first time, such as one from Northern Ireland, created new displays. Mock passports handed out at the entrance allowed visitors to check off each country as they traveled the room.

The celebration of world customs came alive with engaging performances. Leah Streams (RU – 2027), showcased her voice talents by singing Irish and Estonian songs. Led by Assistant Professor of Music Dr. George Blankston playing African drums, a student trio danced a blend of traditional and contemporary dance and music styles from Togo, Benin, and Ghana.

Senior Spotlight: Mary Beth Botts

Just as her mother Joyce Daniel (RU - 2001) succeeded in earning a degree from Reinhardt in her 40s, Mary Beth Botts (RU - 2024) looks forward to graduating this May at age 43. Not only has she earned a bachelor's degree in nursing but she serves as president of her nursing cohort and an inductee of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society. She represented her cohort at faculty meetings and served as a student representative of the nursing program. On Kindness Day, she organized making goodie baskets to spread the message of community to businesses near the Cauble School of Nursing in Jasper, Georgia.

Botts started her healthcare career at age 17 as a CNA, but six years later, she put her nursing aspiration aside and prioritized her family’s needs and goals. Botts and her husband served as missionaries, taught English abroad, and homeschooled their three children. In turn, her family’s instrumental support during her studies at Reinhardt helped her succeed, “I’ve done some difficult things in my life and this by far was the most challenging. It requires you to push yourself to the limits knowing that you have the ability to save a life and you also can lose a life.”
