Make a Giving Tuesday gift to Landmarks Illinois!

For more than 50 years, Landmarks Illinois has been protecting our historic built environment, helping communities across the state save the special places that hold value and meaning. This important work includes protecting significant sites through preservation easements, which are legal agreements between our organization and property owners that ensure historic places are celebrated and honored for many years to come.

Among the nearly 550 historic properties Landmarks Illinois protects through preservation easements is the Charles Wenner House in Jo Daviess County. Wenner built the two-story home in 1854 of locally quarried limestone and lived in it with his family until shortly before his death in 1905. The National Register-listed property is significant as it represents a vernacular-type dwelling constructed by settlers who came to Galena in the mid-19th century to work the lead mines. Charles Wenner's stepfather Louis Schaber, who gifted him the land where the house sits, arrived in Galena from Wurtemburg, Germany in April 1834. The property was used as a corn crib and sat vacant for several decades until current owners Brian McCormick and Rob Latousek (pictured above second & third from right) bought and restored it.

On this global day of giving, please make a gift to Landmarks Illinois so we may continue to protect our historic places.
