Don't leave your leaves this Autumn!

The city of Sterling Heights wants to remind all residents that leaf mulching or removal is required. Raked leaves need to be stored in approved bags or containers that should be at the curb for pick-up by the week of December 5-9, 2022 on your regularly scheduled yard waste collection day. Watch our handy video for more information on proper leaf mulching or removal.

Walkers, joggers and bicyclists can enjoy a scenic new route in Sterling Heights as part of a recently completed project along the Red Run Drain.

The new 1.35-mile hike/bike trail branches south from the Freedom Trail on Metropolitan Parkway, curves behind Freedom Hill County Park and continues west to Schoenherr Road.

The city is also planting of 475 trees, 2,500 shrubs and 4,000 native pollinator plants along the north side of the Red Run Drain and within the Sterling Relief Drain began this year and will be completed in spring 2023. Once fully established, the plantings help prevent erosion and act as green infrastructure to capture and filter an estimated 200,000 gallons of stormwater runoff per year to remove phosphorus and nitrogen. It’s also part of the Green Macomb Urban Forest Partnership and will increase habitat biodiversity.
The Sterling Heights Sustainability Commission was awarded the Outstanding Resiliency and Sustainability Award for the 2022 Planning Excellence Awards by the Michigan Association of Planners (MAP/APA Michigan) at their annual conference on Oct. 12.

Sustainability Commissioners continue to act as role models in the community and are passionate about making Sterling Heights a more sustainable place to live, work and engage. Each commissioner dedicated countless hours to this plan outside of regularly scheduled commission meetings and continue to demonstrate commitment to improving environmental aspects of their community. For these efforts, City leadership also recognized the Sustainability Commission as the City’s “Commission of the Year” at the 2021 Sterling Heights Volunteer Banquet.
