ARTISTS WHO PAINT SNOW

Snow, a captivating muse for artists worldwide, evokes a range of emotions in depictions from serene streetscapes to dynamic ice formations. Historical snow-themed art has become highly sought after, with collectors drawn to the emotional allure of crisp white scenes. However, capturing the complexity of snow proves challenging, as its seemingly flat canvas conceals a world of reflected colors. The article explores diverse cultural interpretations of winter scenes and profiles renowned artists like Ansel Adams and George Henry Durrie. Trisha Romance's warm holiday depictions add a touch of joy. Ultimately, the celebration of snow in art invites readers to appreciate its transformative beauty. On the pages in this story we searched out some of the most beautiful winter images back in 2012 to get you started on your appreciation of snow art.

RICHARD SAVOIE

A SYMPHONY OF COLOURS & MELODIES

Renowned artist Richard Savoie's vibrant journey was presented in our early 2010 issue of ARABELLA. From childhood crayon creations that delighted his mother to a profound connection between music and color, Savoie's art is a symphony of sensory experiences. His formal art education and influences from masters like M.A. Fortin shaped his transition into both pastels and oils. Born in 1969 along the Atlantic shores of New Brunswick, Richard's love for landscapes, streets, and wilderness mirrors the sounds and scenes of his upbringing. Allergic to pastel pigments, he seamlessly mastered oils. Music, crucial to his creative process, intertwines with his paintings. Today, Richard's devotion to color as the essence of art is unwavering, and his work, a spontaneous yet deeply thoughtful exploration of the interplay between light, sound, and personal inspiration.

ICE FISHING HUTS

In the heart of Canada's winter wilderness, the ice fishing huts, captured through the lens of photographer Richard Johnson, emerge as captivating symbols of a unique Canadian tradition. Reflecting a deep-seated desire to escape the modern world, these frozen fortresses, known as 'tree forts for grown-ups,' stand as tangible proof of the enduring allure of venturing outdoors under extreme conditions. Richard's lens explores the rich cultural folklore surrounding these structures, showcasing the audacious, distinctive, and humorous ways in which fishermen decorate their shanties. From the practical roots shared with teepees and igloos to the diverse array of structures, each hut becomes a canvas of expression. Richard's photographic journey across provinces encapsulates the vibrant tapestry of Canadian ice fishing culture, preserving over 650 individual huts in his collection. The images not only document architectural forms but also convey the intimate and transient beauty of these seasonal communities, offering a mesmerizing visual narrative that transcends the chill of January.
