Editor's Note: Sunday, we began the Advent pilgrimage towards Christmas. I thought we’d begin our pilgrimage with an article by Ryan Shelton as he reminds us of “Seven Reasons to Celebrate Advent”

Seven Reasons to Celebrate Advent

by Ryan Shelton

I grew up in one of the branches of the church that did not celebrate Advent. Before the leftover turkey disappeared from the refrigerator, we were in full-blown Christmastide through December 25.

I was in my twenties before I was introduced to the tradition of Advent, and it frankly did not have much appeal right away. What was the value of four weeks of longing and expectation? It seems so contradictory to the prevailing atmosphere of festive, cheery glow in the shopping malls.

But I have grown to love Advent. And though it is not a mandated observance in Scripture, there are profitable reasons to consider making Advent part of your holiday rhythm. Here are seven potential benefits of observing Advent. READ MORE

Remember the Casseroles!

A reminder as we roll into Advent season about our Casserole Collection for the needful/homeless in our community. On the 4th Wednesday of each month we deliver casseroles to Our Daily Bread here in Baltimore who feed the hungry. You may bring casseroles when you come to Mass or drop them off during office hours. They can be placed in the freezer in the Narthex until we deliver them. An archived video and recipe for the casserole are below.

The Catholic case for dropping Amazon and Walmart for Christmas shopping

We’ve all been there. You need to buy something random and a bit urgently. You hop in the car and drive to a nearby Walmart, or open your Amazon app and get a next-day delivery through Prime. No doubt that these regular fixtures of our modern economy have brought convenience and expedience to our lives, but what are the tradeoffs that we aren’t considering? Kathryn Judge is the author of Direct: The Rise of the Middleman Economy and the Power of Going to the Source. We talk about how “middlemen” became part of our everyday consumer lives and whether or not the way we shop necessarily lines up with our Catholic values.

In Signs of the Times, Zac and Ashley talk with Kevin Clarke, America’s chief correspondent, about what happened at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ annual meeting in Baltimore.
