About the Presenter: Salli Greene
Salli Greene began her herbal career with a cart in Quincy Marketplace in Boston in 1977 where she sold live plants and homemade products. The herbs were mostly culinary, but her herb source introduced her to those wonderful scented geraniums and they were quickly added. Herbs were always part of her garden plans. Living in the Boston area her friends always wondered why there were green things in their iced tea. But when they tasted the different mints they were thrilled.
Fast forward to 2001 when she moved back Sturbridge (she had been raised here). The home she and her husband purchased had a large yard, so she really went to town with her vegetable, flower and herb gardens. In 2004 she took a 10 month herbal class that introduced her to the world of medicinal herbs. It was a life changing experience. Nothing is more wonderful than making products for your family’s health. From there she studied in Belize with Rosita Arvega and with Rosemary Gladstar. She now teaches Rosemary's 10 month Herbal Apprenticeship.
In 2010, Salli opened Alternatives For Health Herbal Apothecary. It was initially in Brimfield but when a storefront in Sturbridge became available, Salli jumped on it. Her shop is located at 426 Main St. She carries dried bulk herbs, teas and bath products, herbal products and blends for health, essential oils, flower essences, homeopathy, supplies gifts and much more. She feels with this shop, her love of herbs has really come full circle. She enjoys being there and meeting with customers. She also does mail order of her products. If you don’t see something on the website, call the shop. She may just have it!!
The goal at Alternatives For Health Herbal Apothecary is to provide quality products and services to help you get and stay healthy. Salli’s greatest joy is to educate the consumer and have them make their own health products. There is an area dedicated to supplies, and recipes are available. There is also a library area where you can sit and do research. The products carried have been carefully chosen to be of the highest quality.

American Optical’s 1921 Lensometer receives “Landmark” recognition |

March 25, 2023, Southbridge, MA - In the years following its launch, the 1921 American Optical (AO) Lensometer transformed the optical industry by providing quick and accurate lens measurements, driving a transformation in the eyecare industry. A century later, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) recognized the AO Lensometer as a Mechanical Engineering Landmark of historical significance.
A Dedication Ceremony was held on March 25th at the current home of the oldest operational unit – the Optical Heritage Museum in Southbridge MA.
ASME’s Landmark designation is granted to artifacts that represent a significant step forward in the evolution of mechanical engineering. Including the AO Lensometer, 279 artifacts from around the world have been designated historic mechanical engineering landmarks, heritage collections or heritage sites. The ASME History and Heritage Committee selects these artifacts based on their engineering attributes, role in the evolution of the mechanical engineering profession, and significance to society in general.
The 1921 AO Lensometer was the first commercial instrument that allowed opticians to accurately verify eyeglass prescriptions on an affordable device, which could be mass-produced. As a result, the optical dispensing process became more accurate and enabled significant advancements in the eye care industry.
“It’s amazing to see the Lensometer being recognized 100 years on from its launch,” commented Optical Heritage Museum Director, Dick Whitney. “Almost everything you see relating to eyeglass lens dispensing in today’s industry can trace its heritage back to the success of the 1921 AO Lensometer. It took the best minds at the time over 10 years to develop and launch the device, which really highlights the challenges they were faced with.”
Since its birth in 1833, American Optical developed a reputation in precision measurement and pioneered vision solutions for the American market. That heritage continues at ZEISS Vision Care after the eyeglass lens unit of ZEISS and AO/SOLA Optical were merged in 2005, with innovation and precision still core to the promise ZEISS offers the market today.
The dedication ceremony was hosted by the Optical Heritage Museum and sponsored by ZEISS, with guests having the opportunity to explore the museum and follow the journey of the Lensometer refinements which followed the success of the original 1921 device.
“We want to transport people back through time to recognize the transformation the Lensometer enabled in our industry,” said Karen Roberts, Head of Global Customer Enablement at ZEISS Vision Care. “This was another game changing innovation and AO and ZEISS continued to shape and transform the market with many other innovations in the years that followed. With over half of the world’s population requiring vision correction, there are a lot of people who can have the lensometer to thank for their improved vision outcomes.”

Harrington Auxiliary Presents "DNA and You"
SOUTHBRIDGE: The Harrington Auxiliary invites the general public to an upcoming program, “DNA and You,” which takes place on Friday, April 21, 2023, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Sturbridge Senior Center, 480 Main Street, Sturbridge. There is no charge to attend this program.
Gregory J. Tsongalis, PhD, HCLD, Vice Chair and Professor of Pathology, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Audrey and Theodor Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, will examine how DNA influences health and the chances of developing certain medical conditions. His work has focused on identifying mutations in a person’s genetic code that might create an opportunity for personalized treatment, specifically targeted to the patient and the condition.
Dr. Tsongalis, a Southbridge native, graduated from Southbridge High School in 1980. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, earned a Master of Health Science degree from Quinnipiac College as a Pathologist’s Assistant and received his PhD from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (now Rutgers University). He accepted his first clinical position at Harrington Hospital.
Dr. Tsongalis served as the inaugural medical director of the Molecular Pathology Lab at Hartford Hospital for 10 years before joining the Dartmouth Health System in Lebanon, New Hampshire. He is currently the medical director of the Center for Clinical Genomics and Advanced Technology (CGAT) at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and Norris Cotton Cancer Center (NCCC) in Lebanon, NH.
Author/editor of thirteen textbooks in the field of molecular pathology, he has published more than 250 scientific articles, and has been invited to speak at both national and international meetings. He has served on numerous professional society committees and is a Past President of the Association for Molecular Pathology. He serves on the editorial boards of multiple journals and also sits on numerous corporate scientific advisory boards.
The Harrington Auxiliary, established in 1932, is a non-profit organization of dedicated and impassioned volunteers whose mission is to support and enhance the excellent services provided by UMass Memorial Health Harrington.

to Urology Practice

Dr Swierzewski is certified by the American Board of Urology and has been a member of the American Urological Association for more than 30 years. He is also a member of the American Association of Clinical Urologists, Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, and the American Fertility Society, among others, and has twice been awarded the Continence Public Education Award by the American Foundation of Urologic Disease.
He has presented at nearly 50 regional, national and international professional conferences throughout his career and has authored or co-authored more than a dozen publications in scientific journals including the Journal of Urology.
Prior to joining the UMHH Urology practice, Dr. Swierzewski served as Chief of Surgery at Holyoke Medical Center in Holyoke, MA for ten years and Director of Urology for six years. He also served as President of Hampden Urological Associates in Holyoke for more than 20 years.
He earned his medical degree with honors from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA, where he currently serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Urology. He completed his residency at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor Michigan.
In addition to his clinical achievements, Dr. Swierzewski has also served in a number of non-clinical roles within the healthcare sector, including as founder, chairman, and CEO of Healthcommunities.com, a consultant for Remedy Health Media, Imagin Medical, Inc., and Dornier MedTech, as well as a member of the Board of Directors for Aquarius Surgical Technologies, Inc. He has also served in the Army National Guard where he achieved the rank of Captain.

The Totally Responsible Person (TRP®) is a practical workshop that will help every employee – leaders and individual contributors – to learn innovative and proven ways to move out of the “victim mentality” to become a Totally Responsible Person.
A discount of 10% per person is applied when you register 3 or more people for the same workshop at the same time.

Patriots' Day Weekend at Old Sturbridge Village
April 15-16, 2023
In celebration of Patriots’ Day, join us as we explore the stories of Patriots who helped lay the groundwork for the founding of our country during the American Revolution as well as military history from the 19th and 20th centuries.
The stories of the American military will come to life as you chat with guest reenactors portraying troops during the American Revolution, War of 1812, Civil War, and World War II. Explore their camps, see demonstrations of cannon and musket firing, learn about uniform construction, watch military drills, listen to martial music, and so much more! April 15: Stuffed Shells and Meatball Dinner
The Women's Fellowship group of Elm Street Congregational Church, 61 Elm Street in Southbridge, is sponsoring a "Take-Out" Stuffed Shells and Meatball Dinner on April 15th from 5:30pm-6:30pm. The menu will include: Stuffed Shells and Meatballs, Italian Zucchini, French Bread, and dessert. Donation of $12 for adults, and $6 for children 6-12. The church is handicapped accessible, and parking is available in back of the Southbridge Town Hall.

COOKING WITH RICO - ROMAN CUISINE

Roman cuisine is most loved for being exceedingly flavorful, simple, and satisfying. Continuing centuries of old-school traditions, dishes in the Italian capital have their roots in “poor man’s food”, constituting a creative cuisine that pays homage to the local delicacies in the Lazio region.
More than anywhere else in the country, pasta is a staple of Roman cuisine, and dishes such as spaghetti alla carbonara and pasta e ceci alla Romana, penne all'arrabbiata are typical of the city. Pork, cured meats, pizza, broad beans, peas, and artichokes are all common components in Roman cuisine.
Join Chef Rico as he explores some of the many dishes that have evolved from centuries of fusing local ingredients and flavors with culinary influences from the extensive lands Romans conquered in ancient times. This event is $59 per person with wine pairings, or $46 without. Tax and gratuity are not included.
