Dear Shawnee UMC Family,

We will have a guest speaker, Rev. Dr. Dustin Petz,

President and CEO of Kansas Methodist Foundation

Dustin also has a desire to see churches, agencies, and institutions invest their resources in socially responsible ways. In his role, Dustin helps individuals, churches, and related organizations activate their ministry potential in their community. Dustin is an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church and served as a local pastor for 18 years, including communities and congregations across Kansas and Nebraska. He serves on the General Council on Finance and Administration of the United Methodist Church as Chair of the Fiduciary, Foundation, and Property Matters Committee and the Investment Committee. Dustin is a graduate of Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science, Agribusiness. He received a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) from Saint Paul School of Theology, a Master of Theology (Th.M.) from Princeton Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) from Wesley Theological Seminary.

The Scripture will be:

2 Corinthians 9:6-8, 10-11

6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

After the 10:30am Worship Service,

there will be an informational presentation titled,

“Giving Generously & Leaving a Legacy”

in the Sanctuary.

The Tuesday Lectionary Group invites you to share some of your favorite scriptures, which we will then share with all members.

Please email them to:

Here are this week's scriptures for study and meditation:

Psalm 88:1-7 Lord, God of my salvation, day by day I cry out, even at night, before you--let my prayer reach you! Turn your whole being to my outcry because my whole being is filled with distress; my life is at the very brink of hell. I am considered as one of those plummeting into the pit. I am like those who are beyond help, drifting among the dead, lying in the grave, like dead bodies--those you don't remember anymore, those who are cut off from your power. You placed me down in the deepest pit, in places dark and deep. Your anger smothers me; you subdue me with it, wave after wave.

Revelation 9:1-6 Then the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from heaven to earth, and he was given the key to the shaft of the abyss. He opened the shaft of the abyss; and smoke rose up from the shaft, like the smoke from a huge furnace. The sun and air were darkened by the smoke from the shaft. Then locusts came forth from the smoke and onto the earth. They were given power like the power that scorpions have on the earth. They were told not to hurt the grass of the earth or any green plant or any tree. They could only hurt the people who didn't have the seal of God on their foreheads. The locusts weren't allowed to kill them, but only to make them suffer for five months--and the suffering they inflict is like that of a scorpion when it strikes a person. In those days, people will seek death, but they won't find it. They will want to die, but death will run away from them.

Jonah 4:6-11 Then the Lord God provided a shrub, and it grew up over Jonah, providing shade for his head and saving him from his misery. Jonah was very happy about the shrub. But God provided a worm the next day at dawn, and it attacked the shrub so that it died. Then as the sun rose God provided a dry east wind, and the sun beat down on Jonah's head so that he became faint. He begged that he might die, saying, "It's better for me to die than to live." God said to Jonah, "Is your anger about the shrub a good thing?" Jonah said, "Yes, my anger is good--even to the point of death!" But the Lord said, "You 'pitied' the shrub, for which you didn't work and which you didn't raise; it grew in a night and perished in a night. Yet for my part, can't I pity Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than one hundred twenty thousand people who can't tell their right hand from their left, and also many animals?"

Luke 11:29-32 When the crowds grew, Jesus said, "This generation is an evil generation. It looks for a sign, but no sign will be given except Jonah's sign. Just as Jonah became a sign to the people on Nineveh, the Human One will be a sign to this generation. The queen of the South will rise up at the judgement with the people of this generation and condemn them, because she came from a distant land to hear Solomon's wisdom. And look, someone greater than Solomon is here. The people of Nineveh will rise up at the judgement with this generation and condemn it, because they changed their hearts and lives in response to Jonah's preaching--and one greater than Jonah is here..."

Surviving the Holidays: a survival guide with practical helps for the holiday season by Grief Share

Grief Share is a network of grief support groups for people grieving the death of a family member or friend.

November 16, 2022

6pm-8pm

Shawnee United Methodist Church

Please call Warren Livingston or the church office if you are interested in attending this one evening session.

Early Birds will be hosting on November 19th at 9:30AM a no-sew fleece throw get together to make fleece blankets for elementary age children to be included in the Christmas store at Crosslines and/or

Shawnee Community Center.

Each blanket will need 1 1/2 yards of fleece. Please bring scissors and ruler to the event to fringe the blankets. When choosing the fleece, look at patterns that would appeal to children. If anyone feels they cannot participate but would like to donate fleece or money, we would be glad to receive these gifts. An FYI, watch store sales on fleece as it is the season for it to be on sale.

We are also asking the congregation to donate books that would appeal to elementary children to go with the fleece blankets. What better way to read a book than bundled up in a nice warm blanket!

Any questions, please contact Vickie Hammons or Ophelia Behee.
