The Lion's Pause

WE SEEK TO UNITE ALL PEOPLE WITH GOD AND EACH OTHER IN CHRIST THROUGH WORSHIP, FELLOWSHIP, EDUCATION, AND SERVICE

Dear Father RJ

and our friends at St. Mark's Episcopal Church:

As we celebrate this special Holy Season, I wanted to thank you all for your support and love for everyone at Hope Outreach Ministry!

We are more than grateful for each and every one of you, and especially your children, who so faithfully make our personal care packages. You are a great blessing! That bar of soap and new washcloth is so needed! We are giving out hundreds of personal care bags every month and that is special to have a new washcloth.

We are also grateful for the many people who are bringing donations of clothing and household items for our clothing ministry!

I also want to thank all the wonderful people that are coming to serve the meal on the third Sunday! The kindness and love they show everyone is incredibly special!

In closing, the Bible says, “Because He Lives, we can all face tomorrow” and because of all of you, all our lives are better!

God Bless You All,

Pastor Marilyn Roman

Bob's Music Notes

My dad was a super salesman. He could sell anything. When I was 12, his company rewarded him with a Florida trip for the family. I remember my first moments in Miami, seeing those palm trees and enjoying the warm weather (it was December).

So, years later, contemplating retirement from my music position at the downtown Methodist Church in Canton, OH, Florida was beckoning. My wife's sister Carol and husband Ed were residents of Englewood. My brother was Battalion Chief in the Venice Fire Department, and my son was Executive Officer at the Navy's Cecil Field in Jacksonville.

And so Kathleen and I signed up for a four-month rental on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. This was such a new experience for me not to be planning and playing for church, although I made acquaintance with a former Canton organist who played at the Catholic Church, and I volunteered occasional preludes for him.

My brother Dick's wife Barbara was a dynamo. She rose every morning at 4:00, delivered 250 Miami Herald newspapers, went back to bed for a bit, and then opened up "Gems By Barbara" on the Venice Avenue Strip. Dick had a shop two doors south "Tropical Scenes and Things" which, having retired from the Fire Department, was his new occupation.

Kathleen and I attended my brother's Presbyterian Church whose organist was, like me, a graduate of Westminster Choir College and (unlike me) a published composer. We sang in the choir each Sunday and, during the week, I'd go to the post office and pick up the mail for Dick and Barbara's businesses.

Idyllic days indeed. A foreshadowing of my retirement years?
