What do we envision for the future of the FMEC? Our Annual Meeting will continue to thrive - providing presentation experiences for residents and young physicians, helping faculty convene and collaborate, and introducing the excitement of family medicine to medical students. But the FMEC has always been more than the Annual Meeting.
Three strategies are feeding the FMEC’s growth. First, we are pursuing new learning collaborative opportunities, inspired by the innovative work of our members and funded by the many private and public agencies and foundations who want to see family medicine thrive. The first new learning collaborative to launch will focus on using stories and videos to help families communicate about hereditary breast and ovarian cancers, using materials from the CDC’s Bring Your Brave campaign and narrative medicine techniques. This is critically important – many young women do not know their cancer risk, and they are not aware of ways to lower that risk. As primary care physicians, we do not refer enough for genetic counseling– only 41.1% refer a woman who is high risk for genetic counseling or testing. Tools like videos and stories can make raising the issue easier and connect more personally to women of all backgrounds, inspiring them to take action and learn about their risk. Please consider joining the learning collaborative – an opportunity to sign up will be sent shortly. Second, the FMEC is looking at new pathways for students, residents and faculty to become involved in the FMEC. Hundreds of you already speak or present posters at the Annual Meeting. But we can do more, through new committees or interest groups, and new projects. We have over 190 family medicine residency training programs in our region, and engaging you and connecting you across community and state lines is a high priority. In 2023, we will unveil new opportunities so that you can join the FMEC leadership, share your expertise, and advance family medicine.
Lastly, we are in the early stages of exploring new FMEC products, such as a journal. The FMEC Legacy Campaign is providing seed money for this exciting new initiative. A journal could capture content from the Annual Meeting, give many young health professionals their first publishing opportunity, and engage leadership throughout our region as editors, contributors, and more. Watch for more information on this project in 2023.

FACTS Update – Exciting Plans for 2023
In 2010, FACTS — the Fertility Appreciation Collaborative to Teach the Science — began under the support and guidance of the FMEC. Since then, FACTS has expanded with leaps and bounds to educate medical professionals and students around the world in fertility awareness-based methods (FABMs). Now, FACTS is preparing to launch into an exciting new phase as they incorporate as their own nonprofit in January 2023 — FACTS about Fertility! As FACTS begins this new phase, much of their offerings will remain the same, including their website, elective, online CME course, and more! The FMEC looks forward to ongoing collaboration with FACTS as they continue to share the best evidence available about FABMs with our healthcare colleagues. New FMEC Learning Collaborative
Hereditary Cancers in Women/Narrative Medicine: The FMEC will launch a new initiative on hereditary cancers in women based on the Bring Your Brave campaign and funded by the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors and the CDC. Designated faculty and residents from participating programs will be expected to participate in 4-6 virtual learning sessions in 2023 and experiment with campaign materials and other tools. In addition to education and tools, participants will receive a free FMEC’s partnership or residency fair booth as an incentive. Innovator’s Network recordings
Each year at the Annual Meeting, the FMEC’s Innovator’s Network features short talks showcasing how healthcare providers are investing time and energy in developing new tools and services to improve care and reduce cost. The 2022 Innovators Network featured talks on social determinants of health, genomic medicine, value-based care, investing in medically underserved areas, and more. The sessions were recorded and can be accessed from the FMEC Innovator’s Network webpage. These are other recordings are posted on the FMEC YouTube site.
Get ready for Providence, RI
Plan now to join the FMEC in Providence, Rhode Island for the 2023 Annual Meeting, to be held October 13-15, 2023. The meeting will be held at the Rhode Island Convention Center, (One Sabin Street, Providence, RI 02903-1814), and official meeting lodging will be at the Omni Providence and Graduate Providence hotels. Program proposal, award submission and registration deadlines for the FMEC 2023 Annual Meeting will be announced in November 2022. Faculty, residents, and students should be prepared to submit educational program proposals in December/January, as an early February 2023 deadline is anticipated. Hot Topics in Family Medicine recordings are available
Started in 2020, the FMEC Hot Topics in Family Medicine webinar series highlights emerging and exciting topics in family medicine while also spotlighting residency programs and what makes them strong and unique. From August through October, the FMEC presented 13 sessions in partnership with residency programs at 9 health systems, on topics such as advocacy, obstetrics, HIV, collegiate health, gender medicine, dermatology and more. Nearly 250 medical students from across the country tuned into be inspired about family medicine and learn more about residency programs they may apply to. Navigate Student Loans: Help for Health Systems and Their Physicians
The FMEC has posted the recording of our webinar, Navigate Student Loans: Help for Health Systems and Their Physicians. We encourage all FMEC partners to view and share the content with others in your health system. The FMEC promotes Navigate’s services to its members and partners health systems because debt management is critical for family physicians and for those considering family medicine, and because we have been amazed by the stories of savings and debt elimination from those who work with Navigate. If your health system does not offer loan consultation for staff and as part of your recruitment efforts, which is so critical now given that nearly half of physician searches are unfilled, please consider working with Navigate. If you do offer such services, connect with Navigate to see how they might complement your in-house program, to give physicians and job candidates additional resources and help with placements and retention.

Health policy fellowship opportunity – respond by December 1, 2022
Graduating third-year residents or family physicians looking to dive deeper into health policy should consider the year-long Health Policy Research Fellowship, run by The George Washington University (GWU) Division of Family Medicine and the American Board of Family Medicine's Center for Professionalism & Value in Health Care. The Fellowship runs from August 2023-July 2024 and integrates research, health policy, and faculty development in order to develop future family medicine leaders. Fellows work with both the Center and GWU in Washington, DC to address health policy questions of interest through research, collaboration with local and national organizations, and practical externships at federal agencies, policy think tanks, or professional organizations. Clinical practice is continued throughout fellowship year at the GW Immediate & Primary Care clinics, and teaching opportunities are available at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences. The fellowship year culminates in the completion of a fellowship portfolio, which includes a practicum project for presentation and publication.
