This Sunday, our services continue on the normal fall schedule: at 8:00 am in the chapel and at 10:15 am in the church.

Based on overwhelming feedback from the parish, the vestry has decided that masks are no longer required to be worn during worship or other parish events. Masks may continue to be worn by anyone who wishes, but they are not required. Please continue to be courteous and to respect one another’s masking choices, whatever the choice.

This Sunday, November 6, we will welcome a new deacon: the Rev. Dinushka De Silva, who was ordained deacon in June, has been assigned to St. John’s by the Episcopal Church in Connecticut! Professionally, she is a pediatric hospital chaplain at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital. She is a wife and a mom to three rambunctious kiddos! Most days she’s tired but coffee and prayer help her along the way! During her three years with us, Dinushka will preach, lead worship, and work closely with our Outreach committee. A deacon’s ministry is to have one foot in the church and one in the world, and we look forward to Dinuska’s work to link St. John’s more closely with the changing city around us.

The Vestry asks each member of St. John’s to make a pledge of financial support to the parish for 2023. Every dollar given to St. John’s supports the important ministries we offer to our immediate community and to the world: from the music of our choirs to the work of our Outreach Committee to the support we give to our brothers and sisters in Christ in Haiti. Please prayerfully consider what you may contribute to our shared work, and make your pledge via this form.

Tuesday, November 6, is Election Day, and all parishioners are encouraged to undertake their civic responsibility to vote. A list of polling places in the City of Stamford may be accessed on the city’s website. One of St. John’s parishioners, Kieran Edmondson, will be serving as the Election Poll Worker/Ballot Clerk at the Salvation Army Community Center, as he is currently leads two committees – the Voting Rights and Political Representation Committee and the NAACP Young Adults Committee – and is a volunteer co-captain of the Voter Services Committee for the League of Women Voters; he will be reporting, collecting, recording, and validating vote totals to the Associated Press as an Election Night Reporter. We will pray for Kieran in his important work.

The results are in! Based on requests from the parish, Fr. Andrew will address the following topics over the remaining Sundays until the beginning of Advent:
November 6-------What does it mean for the church to be "relevant"?
November 13------Veterans Day service
November 20------Why does Jesus refer to himself as the "son of man"?

St. John’s Outreach Committee will be participating in a Midnight Run with volunteers from other churches and synagogues in Stamford. We will be distributing food, clothing, and personal care items to the homeless on the streets of Manhattan on Saturday, November 5. We are asking for your generous support to help make this Midnight Run a success. During the month of October, we will collect the following items in the bins outside the Godly Play room and the dining room.
New only: tee shirts, socks, underwear. New travel size: toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, disposable razors, mouthwash, shaving cream.
New or cleaned gently used: shoes/sneakers, gloves, hats, blankets, sleeping bags, shirts, sweaters, pants/jeans, light and heavy jackets.

Many of us pray before each meal. Today, many are also praying they can afford their next meal. That’s why we have committed to help The Family Centers distribute a Thanksgiving meal to our neighbors by providing 25 food cards, at $50 per card. Any amount is welcome. You can contribute by writing a check made out to St. John’s Episcopal Church (with “food card” in the memo line) and send it to the parish office: 628 Main Street, Stamford, CT 06901. Or, you may place your check in the collection plate on a Sunday. The Family Centers is asking to receive our donations by November 15. As we listen each Sunday, we hear over and over God’s desire to show God’s love for God’s people. A food card is one way we can answer that call.
