The National Weather Service (NWS) has forecasted two waves of moderate to heavy rain and wind for San Francisco from Friday January 19 through Monday January 22, with a possible break on Saturday, January 20. The heaviest rainfall is expected on Monday, and conditions are expected to improve by Tuesday January 23.
NWS predicts between 0.5-2 inches of rain, with potential for localized flooding and thunderstorms. Wind may reach speeds between 6-17 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
Weather impacts to San Francisco are predicted to be moderate, please plan accordingly and be aware of potential effects of wet weather and strong winds on clients as well as on staff.
The San Francisco Department of Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Branch (PHEPR) will continue to monitor National Weather Service for updates. If the conditions get worse, we will send another message.
What can we do?
Call 9-1-1 for problems involving power lines, vehicles, or buildings
Take steps now to prepare your facilities for wind and rain:
- Look out for falling trees and branches that could block building entrances or are a potential threat to staff and clients
- Identify and address areas prone to leaks and flooding
- Ensure removal of debris and clear storm drains
- Use sandbags if needed
- Be aware of impacts on clients and community members as well as staff.
Downed Power Lines: If you see downed powerlines, stay away. Don’t exit your car or home. Call 9-1-1. Then call PG&E at 1-800-743-5000.
Preventing indoor flooding with sandbags: Get sand bags and prepare them ahead of time. Please see https://sfpublicworks.org/sandbags for sandbag information.
Street Flooding: For flooding caused by storm drains, catch basins, etc., please call 311 to request a crew be sent to your location to clear storm drains.
Downed Power Lines or suspect gas leak: If you see downed powerlines or smell gas or suspect an emergency, stay away. Don’t exit your car or home. Call 9-1-1. Then call PG&E at 1-800-743-5000.
