Get to Know Lynn
Please get to know a little better our newest member of the vestry, Lynn Vannier.
Where did you grow up and where have you lived?
I was born and lived in Eugene, OR, until the middle of eighth grade, when my family moved to Sisters. I attended high school in Sisters, and then came to Portland to attend Lewis & Clark College. I now live in Lake Oswego.
What was your first job?
My very first job ever was as a substitute newspaper delivery girl for the Eugene Register-Guard when I was twelve. My first full-time summer job was working in the warehouse at a nail-polish company in Sisters, OR.
Have you always been an Episcopalian?
I was raised in an evangelical church. It was called a "non-denominational" church, but its theology has a lot in common with the Southern Baptist tradition.
What else do you do on Sundays?
Sundays are often family days. After church, Denis, our daughters, and I will often go on a hike or sail on the Columbia when the weather is nice. If it's rainy or cold, we'll play games or pick a movie to watch together.
Who is your favorite composer?
Favorite composer is a tough one! I was a music major in college, and I find pleasure in almost every genre. But the music I keep coming back to is from the Baroque era. Handel for the oratorio, Telemann for the oboe pieces, and Boccherini for everything else!
What am I really good at?
Probably logistics and planning. I'm my extended family's go-to planner. If there's a gathering to be had or a place everyone needs to get to, I'm your gal.
What am I really bad at?
Heights! I'm okay in a building or a structure, but I was a very clumsy child and don't trust my feet not to pitch me off a hiking trail if it's too narrow and steep!
Favorite Portland restaurant?
My favorite local restaurant is Tavern on Kruse in Lake Oswego. It's a short walk from my home and is a great little spot for happy hour or Saturday brunch!
Favorite book?
Usually whatever I happen to be reading at the moment. But the authors I keep returning to over and over again are Ken Follet and Jeffrey Archer.
What's one change you would make in the world?
I would invent a pause button. Something that would allow anyone in any situation to take a breath before they react. So that our words to one another come not from anger, fear, anxiety, or thoughtlessness; but instead from a place of calm, peace, and strength. (And so I could find the right words for the situation in the moment I needed it, rather than it coming to me in the car on the drive home.)
Where would you go in a time machine?
I would go to a dinner party in Jane Austen's time. I would love to hear the music and the chatter, and be asked to "take a turn about the room," with another guest.
