Get to Know Lynn

Please get to know a little better our newest member of the vestry, Lynn Vannier.

Where did you grow up and where have you lived?

I was born and lived in Eugene, OR, until the middle of eighth grade, when my family moved to Sisters. I attended high school in Sisters, and then came to Portland to attend Lewis & Clark College. I now live in Lake Oswego.

What was your first job?

My very first job ever was as a substitute newspaper delivery girl for the Eugene Register-Guard when I was twelve. My first full-time summer job was working in the warehouse at a nail-polish company in Sisters, OR.

Have you always been an Episcopalian?

I was raised in an evangelical church. It was called a "non-denominational" church, but its theology has a lot in common with the Southern Baptist tradition.

What else do you do on Sundays?

Sundays are often family days. After church, Denis, our daughters, and I will often go on a hike or sail on the Columbia when the weather is nice. If it's rainy or cold, we'll play games or pick a movie to watch together.

Who is your favorite composer?

Favorite composer is a tough one! I was a music major in college, and I find pleasure in almost every genre. But the music I keep coming back to is from the Baroque era. Handel for the oratorio, Telemann for the oboe pieces, and Boccherini for everything else!

What am I really good at?

Probably logistics and planning. I'm my extended family's go-to planner. If there's a gathering to be had or a place everyone needs to get to, I'm your gal.

What am I really bad at?

Heights! I'm okay in a building or a structure, but I was a very clumsy child and don't trust my feet not to pitch me off a hiking trail if it's too narrow and steep!

Favorite Portland restaurant?

My favorite local restaurant is Tavern on Kruse in Lake Oswego. It's a short walk from my home and is a great little spot for happy hour or Saturday brunch!

Favorite book?

Usually whatever I happen to be reading at the moment. But the authors I keep returning to over and over again are Ken Follet and Jeffrey Archer.

What's one change you would make in the world?

I would invent a pause button. Something that would allow anyone in any situation to take a breath before they react. So that our words to one another come not from anger, fear, anxiety, or thoughtlessness; but instead from a place of calm, peace, and strength. (And so I could find the right words for the situation in the moment I needed it, rather than it coming to me in the car on the drive home.)

Where would you go in a time machine?

I would go to a dinner party in Jane Austen's time. I would love to hear the music and the chatter, and be asked to "take a turn about the room," with another guest.

Easter Sunday

What a beautiful day. Joyful but, of course, also a bit sad for us, as we said our goodbyes to Father Jeremy, wishing him well as he transitions to his new calling at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. We are so thankful for his service, leading us through and out of the pandemic, leaving us stronger and more confident. We will miss him, his sermons, and his spirit. And we welcome him back whenever he can preach at Ascension!

Thank you to our Minister of Music, Emma Cowell, and the Ascension Choir, comprised of Susan O'Hollaren, Quinland Porter, Beatrice Vannier, Emily Guimaraes, Penny Hummel, Quin Porter, Sabine Vannier, Kathleen Barrett, Ian Cartwright, and Rod Pommier, for the beautiful music they shared throughout Holy Week. They prepare for many weeks on Sundays after our service, and while they enjoy the preparation, we especially enjoy the performances!

This beautiful day was also made possible by the huge efforts of Karen Albaugh (below right) and the rest of the altar guild, comprised of Janet Baker (below middle), Jan Stuermer, Pam Howard, Kim Shafer, Pammie Hummelt, and Jim LeBaron, who not only arranged the gorgeous and fragrant floral baskets and lilies in the sanctuary for Easter, with the help of Kathleen Barrett, but prepared the sanctuary for all four services during Holy Week. This is no small task. Thank them when you see them, and talk to Karen about joining up if you are able!

And last but not least, this beautiful day was also made possible by Laura (below right) and Jeff Krum, who orchestrated yet another lovely reception in Reinhart Hall. Laura's artistic vision always transforms the hall with a wow factor as we descend from the sanctuary to a welcoming, warm and elegant space where we can all relax and enjoy each other's company. We owe a lot of thanks to this tireless couple, so tell them when you see them.

The Collect for The Second Sunday of Easter: April 7, 2024

Almighty and everlasting God, who in the Paschal mystery established the new covenant of reconciliation: Grant that all who have been reborn into the fellowship of Christ's Body may show forth in their lives what they profess by their faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
