TOY SAFETY AWARENESS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Toys and games are tons of fun for kids and adults.

Here are some toy safety tips to help them stay safer and have a blast.

Top Tips about Toy Safety:

  • Consider your child’s age when purchasing a toy or game. Read the instructions and warning labels to make sure the toy is just right for your child.
  • Check to make sure there aren’t any small parts or other potential choking hazards before you settle on the perfect toy.
  • Separate toys by age and keep a special eye on small game pieces that may be a choking hazard for young children. Toys intended for older children may pose a risk to younger, curious siblings.
  • Throw away all packaging and plastic overwrap.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is on the Rise.

Typically, RSV causes a cold, which may be followed by bronchiolitis or pneumonia. Symptoms generally last an average of 5-7 days.

RSV in Very Young Infants

Infants who get an RSV infection almost always show symptoms.

Common symptoms include:

  • Runny nose
  • Decrease in appetite
  • Cough, which may progress to wheezing or difficulty breathing

In very young infants (less than 6 months old), symptoms of RSV infection may be

  • Irritability
  • Decreased activity
  • Decreased appetite
  • Apnea (pauses in breathing more than 10 seconds)

Fever may not always occur with RSV infections.

How hard is your baby breathing? What to look for.

Chest wall retractions happen when a baby must use muscles between the ribs or in the neck to breathe. It is a sign that your baby is having to work harder than normal to breathe. Watch your child's rib cage as they inhale. If you see it "caving in" and forming an upside-down "V" shape under the neck, then they are working too hard.
