Former Council Member Sandra Massa-Lavitt Funds Security Camera Trailer

Through former Council Member Sandra Massa-Lavitt's Council discretionary funds, the Police Department recently purchased a portable security camera trailer. The trailer can be deployed throughout the city to help monitor and protect the community. It also provides a live feed to officers and dispatch to monitor what is taking place in real time.

Thank you to Sandra for helping the Police Department and the City of Seal Beach!

House Fire in Leisure World

At approximately 8:30pm on Monday, March 11th, your Seal Beach firefighters on Engine 48 were the first to arrive on the scene of a reported structure fire at a home in Leisure World. Upon their arrival, they observed visible smoke and a working fire in a bedroom of the residence. Crews quickly extinguished the fire and searched the residence. Two people were displaced and one was assessed for smoke inhalation. Additionally, support was provided by Red Cross. Fortunately, the home had working smoke alarms, which resulted in limited property damage and no loss of life.

Public Works

Pavement Repairs

Since the completion of the Orange County Sanitation District’s (OCSan) Sewer Force Main Project on Westminster Avenue, the City has been working with OCSan on some localized pavement repairs. There were some areas that met the City’s minimum structural standards, but the rideability was bumpy and poor. Both OCSan and the City agreed to address the bumpy areas through a treatment called diamond grinding by which the contractor would grind down the raised areas of asphalt so that the finished product is smooth and provides a comfortable ride for motorists. Once the grinding was complete, the contractor fog-sealed the asphalt for aesthetics and to repel moisture for a longer lasting repair.

Potholes Filled along Heather Avenue and Tulip Street

The on-going winter storm rainfall causes roadway pavement degradation. As potholes are reported, staff notes the location and diligently schedules to fill them. Maintaining pavement integrity for all drivers and recreational individuals is a high priority. This past week, staff repaired potholes along Lampson Avenue, Heather Avenue, and Tulip Street.

Graffiti Removal - San Gabriel Bike Trail

In recent months, there has been an influx of graffiti appearing on the Pier and other areas around the City. As part of the City’s beautification efforts, staff continues to keep graffiti removal as a priority by going above-and-beyond to keep this high standard. Staff completes routine checks at graffiti hot spots, which includes the San Gabriel River bike trail.

Power Washing at Marina Center

Preschool is in session and Public Works staff is here to make sure that the children have a nice area in the back of the Marina Center. Power washing the back wall leading to the playground area provides an inviting space for children to utilize throughout the day.

New Landscaping on Lampson Avenue

Caltrans along with OCTA have widened lanes of the I-405 San Diego Freeway between SR-73 and I-605, covering 16 miles. Due to the major construction, Caltrans is now revitalizing the areas that were affected. Newly planted landscape along with mulch was added along Lampson Avenue just west of the Seal Beach Tennis and Pickleball Center.

Dump Day for the Win!

On Saturday, March 9th, the City of Seal Beach hosted another successful Dump Day in partnership with Caltrans, Republic Services, and Goodwill where residents were able to drop off bulky items free of charge. Salvageable items were kept out of the landfill and collected by Goodwill. This was our best Dump Day yet, with over 6 bins filled and 140+ drop-offs!

Did you miss Dump Day? As a reminder, Republic Services single-family residential customers may request free pickup for two bulky or electronic items per year. Additional pickups are available for a fee. If you live in a multi-family complex, check with your property manager to find out how to dispose of bulky items. Call 800-299-4898 to learn more.

Marine Safety

Girl Scouts Tour Marine Safety Headquarters

On March 7th, Seal Beach Girl Scout Troop 2204 visited Marine Safety Headquarters. The girls got a tour of the building and specialized equipment. They had fun learning about beach safety and earning their first aid badge!

Tryout Information Night

The Marine Safety Department hosted a tryout information night on February 28th. Twelve prospective candidates were in attendance and took part in a tour and overview of lifeguard operations and equipment. A presentation was given regarding the tryout process, basic lifeguard academy, and ways to prepare. This outreach was provided to drive interest for those wanting to become lifeguards for the summer.

What's Happening?

  • On March 8th, lifeguards were notified by the Coast Guard of an oil sheen 2-3 miles off Huntington Beach. The oil sheen spanned 2.5 miles in length and 0.5 miles in width. Lifeguards surveyed Surfside and Main Beach and observed no tar balls or other findings in relation to the sheen. Staff from the Office of Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR) responded and had no findings in our area.

  • Marine Safety has observed elevated beach crowds and boat traffic in the past week. This has created an increase in activity and is likely the start of the Spring Break rush.

  • During the week of March 11th, Marine Safety Officer Jeremy Jenks and Lifeguard Matt Corb will take part in a Rescue Boat Operations Course. The training course is hosted by the Department of Boating and Waterways and instructed by LA County Lifeguards. This course trains boat operators on what they will encounter during boat rescues, towing, dewatering, helicopter hoisting, and night operations.

  • ALWAYS SWIM NEAR A LIFEGUARD!

May 2nd at the Old Ranch Country Club. Please join us and come together to express our appreciation for the brave men and women of public safety. Please visit the Seal Beach Police League website at https://sealbeachpoliceleague.com/ for further information.

The Briefing Room

  • Staff attended the West Orange County CHP Crash Task force. This group is aimed at making the roadways safer in the West Orange County area. The City of Seal Beach, Cypress, Garden Grove, Westminster, Orange County Sherriff’s Department, and CHP make up this group and have been working together to address the main collision factors within the area.

  • The Annual Seal Beach Peddler took place, which is a local group of residents who ride bicycles to various locations to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day early. This year's event had approximately 50 participants, and officers monitored the event to ensure public safety.

  • Staff is attending Mobile Field Force Training in order to meet new state standards when responding to a protest or riot situation. Officers will now have the newest state mandates they need to deploy any type of munitions (pepper ball, bean bag rounds, or 40MM sponge rounds.) This is a mandate under Penal Code §13514.5. Eventually the entire sworn staff will attend this training.
