MONDAY MEMO
4th graders Alice and Antonia read aloud to each other during book groups last week, they are reading Rez Dogs by Joseph Bruchac.
Greetings!

It's a fun and busy week as we celebrate the end of the first trimester and look forward to a well deserved vacation next week.

Happy Monday,
Nelia
NOTES

Retakes for school pictures, if students were absent or dissatisifed with their photo, will be this Thursday, November 17, in the late-morning. If you want a re-take because you didn't care for the original picture, please be sure to return all the original prints in the order envelope as soon as possible. Retakes cannot be done without the original order in hand.

THIS FRIDAY AFTERNOON
This Friday is a half day for all PK-8 students.

All elementary students in grades K-5 will go ice skating, no matter their house. Pick up at the arena is at 1:30. Parents and siblings are welcome to join us on the ice, please come.

6-8th grade middle school students will stay at school after Bio Fair, reflecting and cleaning up. Preschoolers will have a regular half day. Please pick up PK and 6-8th graders at school at 1:15.

The Extended Day Program will run for preschool from 1:15-4:15 and for 6-8th graders from the 1:15 dismissal until 5:00. If you plan for your child to attend, please email Heather or Sean directly and let him know so that they can plan for the long afternoon accordingly.
GRANDPARENTS' DAY
Monday, November 28 will be our annual Grandparents' Day, we are so thrilled to return this to an in-person event. Grandparents and Special Friends of our students are invited to spend all or part of day in classrooms. Lunch will also be provided for visitors. If you didn't receive an invitation, it's simply because we don't have your mailing address, but you are still welcome! We do count on RSVPs for planning and ordering lunch, so please let Krystal know if you plan to attend, and for which part of the day.

We would appreciate the help of a few parents on November 28 to do the following. If you can help, please let Nelia know:
  • welcome visitors, help them find their students, and taking pictures
  • set up and clean up two lunches
COCOA FUNDRAISER
Students in the service elective are trying to raise funds for local animal shelters, and the cocoa is offered every other week to elementary/middle school students. This week it will be for elementary school students on Thursday, and they should order and pay in advance (Tuesday or Wednesday) with their classroom teacher. Cups of cocoa are $1 and toppings are 50 cents each.
HEAD LICE
Unfortunately, we have had multiple cases of lice reported among our students, in various classrooms. For the next couple of weeks, we encourage:
  • parents to do regular head checks at home
  • students with long hair to wear it tied back or under a hat
  • teachers to do their best to help keep student personal items separated, although limited space at school can make this impossible at times
For more information you can use this information from the CDC:
Krystal is willing to give head checks if you'd like to coordinate that with her.
SCHOOL CLOSURES
If we have to close school early, have a delayed start, or cancel for the day (usually due to weather), families will get an automated voice message to the number you requested, as well as an email. We also always notify WCAX.
NEW CLUB
5-8th grade Mathcounts club is meeting again for the 2022-2023 school year. We will be meeting after school on Mondays from 3:30-4:30 pm upstairs in the house starting on Monday, November 14. Mathcounts is a national mathematics club designed to be flexible enough for all interested 5th - 8th graders to play together and improve their math skills. Last year's Mathcounts club was the only club in the State of Vermont to achieve Gold Level Status! We will begin by participating in the Mathcounts Video Challenge. Teams of 4 will be challenged to create a video that shows the solution to a problem in a real world setting. Click on this link to get more information about the Video Challenge.
PAMPERED CHEF FUNDRAISER
Parent and 1st Grade Teacher Robyn Doyon (3rd grader Avery and Preschooler Addy) has organized an online catalogue sale with Pampered Chef. Upgrade your kitchen and pantry, or find gifts for the upcoming holidays. 10-15% of the total sales will be donated back to Riverside, and as a PC vendor, Robyn will will also donate 10$ of every 100$ that is sold, to help meet the parents' annual $25,000 fundraising goal. Sale is from November 1-November 18. Keep an eye out for more information regarding a live demonstration between now and Nov 18th.
  • Catalogue - a catalogue will go home with students this week, but all orders are done online
  • Online orders  - are open until November 18; use the link www.pamperedchef.com/party/riverside to browse online and order. Share the link with friends and family to maximize our fundraising efforts.
If you have any questions, please reach out to parent Arcelie Reyes (Kingston 8th, Phoenix 5th, Cassius 1st).
RECORDER CLUB
K-2 Recorder Club will meet on Wednesday this week from 3:15-4:00.
CHESS CLUB
Nathan and Mr. G. will be running chess club every Thursday (note this change!) beginning at 3:30 for all grade and ability levels. Kids may be picked up whenever. Ideally, most of the elementary students would be picked up after 45 minutes to an hour of chess (4:15 - 4:30) as it is a long time to concentrate on things after a long day of school. Nathan will stay until 5:00 for those that want the extra time. If any parents want to contribute snacks to share, it would be appreciated. Feel free to contact Mr. G. with any questions.

Please remember that students should be picked up directly when the club ends, and not return to the EDP (unless you coordinate specifically with Sean).
CRAZY 8s
3-5th grade Crazy 8s club will meet this Wednesday from 3:40-4:30. Please remember to pick up your child when the session ends and not expect them to return to the Extended Day Program. Note: our last meeting date will be December 7.
EMBODIMENT FOR HOPE
Parent Madeleine Balcom (4th grader Azro, 8th grader Sylvan) is helping to organize a holiday benefit for H.O.P.E. of four yoga classes at 6:30 on December 1, 8, 15, and 22. Cost is donation of money or a toy. The classes will take place at Creative Healing and Fitness at 518 Main St., Lyndonville.
