Tutoring Combats Learning Loss

After being released last week, the NAEP report, known as the Nation's Report Card, showed significant declines in math and reading scores since its last administration in 2019. While there is ongoing debate about the cause of the plummeting scores, one thing is clear:  children have a lot of catching up to do.

The one-on-one structure of the Book Buddies program makes it particularly apt at supporting students with their specific reading needs. Last year, 84% of all Book Buddies read proficiently by the end of tutoring. This year, the program is up and running at 12 of Alexandria's elementary schools! We know we can help the children we serve mitigate and overcome learning loss.

Teachers Concur, Book Buddies Works

"I love the Book Buddies program. Last year, I had two students who were on the cusp, starting the year a tad below level who are reading on level this year because of Book Buddies. Tutoring helps students keep momentum. First grade has a rigorous pace, with students needing to go up a level almost every month. For kids new to this country whose parents come here because they want the best for the next generation, but they don’t have the strategies to help their kids, Book Buddies supplemental tutoring really makes a big difference."
