The Penrose project was a partnership between Wildlands and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of Forestry, for the expansion of Weiser State Forest.
The property is located to the west of Weiser State Forest’s Penn Forest Tract. It contains Penrose Creek and sections of Beaver and Hazle creeks.
Penrose also includes a core Natural Heritage Area and an Important Bird Area. It supports several plant species of special concern and is home to breeding populations of multiple game species including Pennsylvania's state fish, the brook trout.
The protection of these wetlands and forests is key for sustaining clean, healthy water for drinking, fishing and recreation in surrounding reaches of the Lehigh River watershed.
We are proud the property is now in the hands of the DCNR. Soon, the public will have full access to all of the wonderful recreational opportunities this unique property provides.
We are grateful for the support of our giving community, as well as the legacy partnerships, that made the permanent protection of 2,700 acres possible. As state forest lands, these special acres expand both public lands and opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts.
