Maureen Woods Education Bursary
This year's recipient of the Maureen Woods Education Bursary is Desirae Munro!
Desirae has been working in Saskatchewan’s public libraries since 2019 and recently finished her MLIS with the iSchool at Syracuse University (Syracuse, NY). She sees the library as the heart of the community being served — fitting not only the "third space" concept, but personally sitting at the centre of her Ikigai (the Japanese concept of something that gives a person a sense of purpose, a reason for living). Desirae loves working with people and credits the great librarians she grew up with for the inspiration to finally pursue her dream of being a librarian when she "grows up" (although astronaut still sounds fun). She looks forward to continuing her work in library leadership roles that strengthen and build our communities.

Two CFLA-FCAB Positions Open
Board Member from Prairie Provinces
The Saskatchewan Library Association (SLA) and Manitoba Library Association (MLA) are jointly seeking nominations for a Prairie Provinces Representative to the CFLA-FCAB Board of Directors.
In order to be nominated, a candidate must be a member in good standing of a member organization (including SLA). Because the Federation represents associations it is important that nominees effectively represent and are connected with the association(s) they represent.
The Prairie Provinces Representative is a member of the CFLA-FCAB Board of Directors. Being a member of the Board can be time-consuming and challenging work as CFLA-FCAB is in its formative years and is working to advance and secure a strong national voice while at the same time building the organization from the ground up. The work is rewarding and provides an opportunity to work with colleagues from across the country.
This role is a two year commitment, from 2024 to 2026. Board members are expected to make themselves available for regular teleconference meetings (currently held monthly). Business will be conducted in between meetings by
email and teleconference.
Please submit your interest to SLA by email to info@saskla.ca before March 21, 2024.

This position is a two year term from Winter 2024 to Winter 2026. The committee typically meets monthly between September and June, with additional meetings scheduled as required.

SLA Position Statement on Material Challenges
SLA's Advocacy & Development Committee has written a position statement outlining SLA's stance on material and program challenges in libraries. The statement has been approved by the SLA Board of Directors.
This statement affirms SLA's respect for the right of all patrons to choose which materials they deem appropriate for themselves and their families, while simultaneously respecting that this right does not extend to or allow for interference with other patrons and their same right to make those decisions for themselves.

Hello everyone,
Time flies when you’re having fun, as the old saying goes, and it’s that time of year again – we’re in the leadup to our annual Saskatchewan Libraries Conference! The Conference Planning and Conference Program Committees have been hard at work over the past number of months getting everything ready to roll, and we’ve got a fantastic program of professional development and top-of-mind topics prepared for you at this year’s event. (Is it dating myself to call it a “really big shoe?" That’s a reference that the kids these days definitely get, right?)
“But James,” you may say to yourself, “this is the March issue of SLAte, and the Saskatchewan Conference is the first week of May. Aren’t you a month early to be writing this?” Well, firstly, with the weather we’ve had so far this year, you could excuse me for being confused about what month it is. But, more importantly, I’d be remiss in my duties as President if I didn’t make sure you have the opportunity to take advantage of our discounted conference early-bird rates, which are available until Friday, March 15.
We’ve prepared a full slate of great presentations, interesting speakers and exciting events – and now all we need there is you! We look forward to having you join us at the DoubleTree Hotel in Regina on May 2-3, and don’t forget to get your registration in by March 15 to secure your early-bird pricing. See you there!
Until next time,
James Hope Howard
SLA President

Sask Children's Festival Seeking Library Partners
The Children's Festival of Saskatchewan is developing a new program to bring the joy of its annual festival to more provincial audiences, and is seeking library partners to help them do that!
Since the onset of the pandemic, the Children's Festival of Saskatchewan has offered a variety of virtual programming options. Now going into its 5th year, they continue to offer their Virtual Festival as a way to ensure all children in Saskatchewan can access quality arts programming for free. This year, they hope to expand access to the Virtual Festival in a way that can help address digital poverty with their Provincial Outreach Program (POP) Events by partnering with libraries across the province.
The Children's Festival of Saskatchewan is looking for libraries willing to host events where one or more festival videos can be streamed during this year's festival from June 6-9, 2024. The videos will be free for libraries to access, and Teacher's Kits with additional programming ideas to accompany the videos are also available for free upon request.
Sound like something your library might be interested in? Contact Olivia Johnston, the festival's Classroom and Community Coordinator, by emailing community@childrensfestsk.ca before April 30, 2024.
