Rabbi Silvestri's Round Up
|
Imagine the scene. Thousands of Jews from around Eretz Yisrael embark on a journey and swarm ירושלים, Yerushalayim, to celebrate the holiday of סוכות, Sukkot. They congregate at the בית המקדש, the Temple, to celebrate with song, dance, juggling and acrobatics.

Proper Nouns and Essays
Mr. Simon’s Third Grade class studied proper nouns and how to distinguish them from common nouns. What better way to show what they know than by writing essays? They wrote about their favorite books and focused on proper nouns. Each student worked with a partner to read and compare their essays!

Lulav and Etrog
Students in Morah Aviva's ECE4 class had the opportunity to make brachot, blessings, and shake a real lulav and etrog in the sukkah after Morah set up the lulav and showed them all the Arba Minim, the 4 species, in the classroom . Everyone also worked eagerly on creating their own little Torahs in preparation for Simchat Torah! They used Alef Bet peel and stick letters for the scroll, and then decorated a beautiful felt cover by tracing the word Torah in Hebrew with glue and adding sparkly jewels.

Friendship
It’s all about teamwork in Morah Yocheved's First Grade Judaic Studies class. The students worked hard helping each other and working together to create a paper Sukkah chain! The chain could probably be wrapped around the school when both classes finished! The students are also learning about good Middot, deeds, like love thy neighbor as thyself and learning to form friendships which is all part of Derech Eretz Kadma L’Torah, good manners even come before Torah. The students are learning games to help their minds and their new forming friendships are wonderful to see.

Early Childhood students enjoyed a special Simchat Torah experience and preparation with our shlichim Aviva and Ori Friedmann. Students enjoyed opening the Torah to see inside, and practicing dancing with the Torah, which they will have the opportunity to do in shul again on Simchat Torah.

Snacks in the Sukkah
This week was all about Sukkot in Morah Sandy's ECE3A class. The students made their own mini sukkahs complete with guests, furniture, and food. They also enjoyed eating their snacks in the sukkah and said the bracha, blessing, for the lulav.

Caffeine for the Soul
Parents and community members enjoyed our monthly Caffeine for the Soul this week with UOS's Rabbi Yitzchak Sprung who joined us in the Sukkah to share words of inspiration. Rabbi Sprung spoke about the need to treat spiritual and deep human experiences like the way we treat general education and exercise. Just like learning loss and missing the gym sets us back, so too with spirituality. Similarly, developing spirituality and meaning requires forethought and constructive planning. Thank you to our fabulous PTO for the healthy treats and coffee!

Petting Zoo
Early childhood and lower school students had a special treat this week in the spirit of Chol HaMoed Sukkot! Marsha’s Petting Zoo came to visit students in ECE15 through 5th grade. The students had a great time petting and feeding a variety of animals including sheep, goats, bunnies, a pig, and a llama.

Outdoor Fun and Volunteering
Our entire upper school enjoyed a Chol HaMoed trip to Levy Park and The Houston Food Bank to volunteer.
The students had a chance to participate in some ODT (outdoor training), team building games, and Sukkot learning. Enjoying the chag with friends and teachers is the best!
