Letter from the Chair

"May you live in interesting times!"

As you may know, this saying is often attributed to an ancient Chinese curse, the idea being that it’s rough to live in an environment of constant flux and change. We as humans like a little consistency in our lives, and some of us like it more than others!

I think that we can all agree that for our industry and for our individual markets, we’re deep into a period of great flux as we adjust to the changes brought about by the pandemic. Changes which are not just limited to health concerns around congregating, but fundamental changes in the way we live and work. Changes in the way we gather information and communicate.

And all of this goes to the heart of our business and the form and function of the events we deliver, and in turn it dictates that, as leaders in this industry, it’s up to us to not only embrace change, but to lead it.

But how do we do that when we’re all in the same situation, facing the same challenges? How do we effectively move forward and deliver events that resonate with our audiences and offer value in this new and ever-changing reality?

The answer of course lies in all of us working together ..read the full letter and Chapter happenings.

The Role of Values-Based Marketing in Events

Over the past two years, it’s become apparent that not all event-goers are created equal and that the values of our audiences are (or should be) influencing how we define our brands, operationalize best practices and tell our stories.

Live and In-Person: How Events Have Shifted in 2022

The past two years have transformed how we work, interact, and hold events. Hybrid and remote work options have taken a firm hold in the professional sphere alongside more traditional in-person work environments. In the same way, in-person events transformed into virtual ones, and while we have seen a shift back to in-person meetings, conferences, and trade shows, virtual components and novel innovations remain. Some of these innovations include ones you may already be using and new technologies you may want to explore for your event:

  • Recorded webinars made available to those who can’t attend the in-person event.
  • Metaverse is a concept in which an online space becomes a proxy for physical reality, allowing people to see and interact with each other without being in the same physical area. The possibilities for metaverse events are endless and range from allowing virtual visits to booths to a live concert in a purely virtual space.
  • Digital assets such as QR passes, smartphone tickets, or digitized event materials made touchless attendance easier.
  • Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) make it easier to trade assets without exchanging physical money.
  • Hologram projections also took a huge leap in the last two years.
  • Natural Language Processing (NLP) is growing in functionality, and the potential applications are increasing. NLP can provide real-time artificial intelligence-powered translation of speech in many languages and can be used on virtual platforms and in-person conversations.
  • We can also expect a shift in “always-on” events in 2022 and beyond.
