Celebrating Women Mavericks in History

This month, our department is celebrating Women in the UTSW Department of Radiology who have or are forging their way in health care history.

As one of the first females to be accepted and graduate from medical school in Texas, we applaud Madge Ann Parker, M.D., as an early maverick of women in medicine, forging a path for others who came after her.

Madge Ann Parker, M.D. (July 20, 1937 - June 19, 2022)

Raised in Wichita Falls, Texas she graduated from high school and completed her B. S. degree in Physical Therapy. She was one of the first females to qualify and graduate medical school in Texas at UT Southwestern, graduating 3rd in her class of 97 students. She was the second female Radiologist to finish an internship and was offered a staff Radiologist position at the VA Hospital in Dallas. With her level of expertise, Dr. Parker helped to build the Radiology department to become a strong building block for future growth of the VA Hospital. Dr. Parker committed her career to UT Southwestern and the VA Hospital in Dallas until her retirement in 2002.

In an interview, Dr. Parker shared, “I have been so blessed to have worked in Radiology. I couldn't have chosen a better profession. I have met and worked with so many amazing and wonderful people.”

Dr. Ann Parker was very well respected, cherished and loved by patients, peers and staff alike.

"In addition to her leadership efforts at the Veterans Hospital in Radiology, she was extensively involved in promoting the residency education rotations of Diagnostic Radiology residents over 3 decades. She had a positive and delightful personality."
