Supporting Children And Women

In Kenya East Africa.

From the Founder

I am thrilled with the progress the LORD has allowed Dorcas Destiny International (DDI) to experience during 2022 with a number of FIRSTS!!

You may know that over these 5 years all of the financial support we’ve received has been by either word-of-mouth or social media! It’s wonderful that friends and family have embraced our mission and come alongside to partner and support the programs that help our beneficiaries in Kenya East Africa!

Dorcas Destiny International successfully made it to the FIVE-YEAR mark in June 2022 with our LIVE event!! Forty-two attendees celebrated us in hearing our history and accomplishments, eating some food, viewing artwork by the children, and buying some Kenya-made items. Many of our past trip team members also made the event memorable! They provided additional insight into the impact we have made since my first visit to the country in June 2017! It was a success!!

Another FIRST, was the trip my niecey-poo Inez Jones led in January 2022! It was the FIRST trip I did not lead (for reasons some of you know…), but the mission was accomplished in general and with the FIRST women’s prison visit in Eldoret, a meeting with farmers and families from in and around Opoya.  And of course they visited and served our Victory School children in Baba Dogo (Nairobi).

In July, we made our FIRST visit to the Migori County Women’s Prison where we were able to distribute hygiene and self-care kits made by our generous team member, Theresa Turner and her daughter-in-love Precious Turner.

The women and their children were greatly blessed by receiving the gifts as well as clothes for their little ones who are there with their mothers in prison (did you get that?

Yes; the young children are there with their mothers). We have titled this Prison Ministry “Special Operations And Redemption” or SOAR. We will maintain contact and relationships with the women and children to ensure their success in accomplishing their goals to earn their freedom back into society and return to their families.

In May 2022, the FIRST Feed My Sheep team made its monthly visit from Nairobi to Opoya Village to enhance and maintain the relationship-building, outreach, and ministry our US-based team makes during our bi-annual or tri-annual trips to Kenya.

Feed My Sheep has and will maintain a monthly visit to the village meeting not only with the youth at the school, but with their families, the farmers we are working with, and the women and men at Migori County Prison.

It’s not a FIRST, but a re-birth. Our Education Crosswalk Program virtual teacher professional development was relaunched on June 21 by my associate, Dr. Regi Ratliff. He facilitated about 12 sessions with an average of 16 participants from both Kenya and Nigeria. The participants reported having learned a lot as they fully engaged in the presentations over those weeks. If you’d like to present or coordinate, Education Crosswalk, we need you as a volunteer! Let me know.

We have launched our FIRST YouTube channel! It’s a little sparse right now, but not for lack of content. We have lots and lots of videos, but remember that we are an ALL-VOLUNTEER organization with me being the primary volunteer with a long to-do list. If you want to help, let me know!

We have of course continued our child sponsorship, high school scholarship, ShoesThatGrow, school lunch, and other programs. As usual, we take clothes, shoes, school supplies, personal hygiene, and other items with us on our trips. (You KNOW that you have an open invitation to join us on any trip so you can experience all of this up-close and personal!)

I am in high expectation of what the LORD has in store for us all in 2023, as we host our FIRST Medical Missions Trip in June 2023!! If you are a health care professional from any discipline, we invite you to apply. See the article in this month’s newsletter to see more!

If you have any questions about our programs, how you can support or volunteer, I look to hear from you! Until next year, happy holidays! Love, hugs, blessings, and more!

My children now understand that a child’s feet and shoe sizes always change!

-- by Tangela Aarons

Being a single mother of three, I always noticed and commented on the ALWAYS increasing shoe size of my children. For Christmas, my children knew that the primary gift from me would be underwear and new shoes. Birthdays were also a catalyst for gifts (necessities that they needed) That is a tradition that I continue, today. I have noticed my children tend to always add necessities to Christmas and birthday gifts.

Shoe size change is generally more prominent during the younger years. Children tend to grow at different rates. Their sizes can increase multiple times before we check/realize. Children grow at various rates during the first 4 years of life (particularly in the first 2 years). The rate of growth is an average of 4 inches per year. The “spike” in growth is usually associated with a change in shoe size. Being a single parent with a limited income, I always focused on the need to maintain the child’s necessities. With the constant growth of children, maintaining necessities is an ongoing challenge.

My children give their children Christmas and birthdays which tend to include new shoes, clothes, and underwear. When I see that, I can’t help but smile. My middle child mentioned remembering that one of my presents to them always included shoes and underwear and that he got it now... It is the necessities, that we generally take for granted.

Until I was in a position where I had to prioritize what was needed versus what was wanted. I took for granted all of the many sacrifices of those before me that allowed me not to “miss” the necessities. What some may think of or take for granted may not seem like a big thing to some, but can make a BIG difference in the life of a child!

(If you want to support the Dorcas Destiny International ShoesThatGrow project and help put shoes on our 600-plus children, the ShoesThatGrow are $20 per pair with a factory and distribution center right in Nairobi. We don’t have to pay for shipping! Woo-hoo!) Text ddi4Kenya to 708-578-6334 to donate $20 for every pair you want to buy. You can also CashApp your $20 via $DDi4Kenya or @DDi4Kenya to Venmo.)
