NECC News: September 2022

OUR MISSION | FACILITY SCHEDULE | DONATE

Hello NECC Community! Don't forget that the NECC is closed this week to give our hard-working staff a well-deserved, much-needed break. Our contractor, Schommer & Sons, continues to make progress on the HVAC system upgrade, and we are holding two staff work days to focus on other cleaning and organizing around the facility. We have also started our annual draining and refilling of the pool to keep up its excellent water quality.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we give our staff a chance for some rest and relaxation. Check out the rest of our newsletter to see everything we’ve got waiting for you when we return on September 6th

Upcoming Dates

  • Facility closure August 29th-September 5th

  • After School Time returns September 6th

  • Fall Swim starts September 12th

  • Hollywood Theater Screening of RBG September 17th

  • Fall 2 Swim Registration: October 18 for Members and October 20 for Everyone

Fall Fitness

If you are looking for ways to stay active during our closure, make sure you head over to our On-Demand Library. We have we have dozens of classes available whenever you need them - all included in an NECC Membership! In fact, longtime instructor Tina Oliva is on an extended break, and she has uploaded 20 new videos including a variety of formats to the on-demand library. Tina’s classes (Wed Gentle Yoga, Fri Yoga, and Fri TBC) will resume on September 28th.

With summer camp kids out of the gym and back in the classroom, our Adult Drop-In Basketball game will return to its regular 12:30-2:30 time on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Volunteer with our Walking School Bus!

We are recruiting 1-2 volunteers to help our staff safely walk 10-15 kids in our After-School Time program from Laurelhurst Elementary School back to the NECC. This program provides critical support for working parents and offers a safe and enriching space for children. We need volunteers who can commit to a regular day (1-5 days) from 2:45-3:45pm - just one hour!

If you are interested in learning more or want to join our school bus, contact our Youth Enrichment Program Coordinator at youth@necommunitycenter.org

Jump Start Swim

We’re gearing up for a NEW swim program focused on reducing the disproportionately high drowning rates of BIPOC and low-income youth! Jump Start Swim is a no-cost, all-ages program for those with little or no swimming experience or water exposure. This 45-minute single-day class teaches water safety skills for both guardians and children, followed by 30 minutes of open swim time with facilitated pool games.

Youth Jump Start participants are eligible for free future swim lessons. At least one adult (per family) must be in the water. We can provide support for swimsuits, swim caps, and other program materials, as well as transportation to and from the lesson.

Join the NECC at the Iconic Hollywood Theatre

Grab your favorite lace collar and join the Hollywood Theatre and the NECC for a benefit screening of RBG (2018) on Saturday, September 17th at 3pm! All proceeds from this special event support NECC programs and activities, including The Community Fund.

This is a public event and all are welcome! The lobby opens at 2pm - arrive early for special programming and activities. Tickets are $10 online or in-person at the Hollywood Theatre box office at 4122 NE Sandy Blvd.

RBG is the definitive documentary on U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (1933 - 2020), who developed a breathtaking legal legacy while becoming an unexpected pop culture icon and symbol of equality and resistance. By turns heartfelt and playful, RBG tells the unique personal journey of her life, her rise to the nation's highest court, and her landmark work on women's rights that we fight to uphold today.

2022 Summer Camp is a Wrap!

Ten weeks, 15 camps, and more than 200 campers! Here are a few highlights (there was so much to choose from)!

  • Recycled Art campers repurposed over 50 pounds of recycled goods donated by NECC participants
  • Campers crisscrossed Portland: Out and About Campers learned the ins and outs of public transportation and Bike Campers learned basic maintenance and safe riding skills.
  • We busted 10 myths in the Myth Busters camp, tried astronaut food in Space Explorers Camp, and created personalized magic wands in Harry Potter Camp.

Not only did NECC Campers have fun, make friends, and learn new skills, parents overwhelmingly reported that their child felt a sense of belonging and inclusion at camp, and camp activities supported their child’s social, emotional, and physical needs! A huge thank you to staff, parents, and campers for creating a supportive experience! And thank you to our Summer Camp sponsors for your support!
