HLSP News - Spring 2024

Brought to you by the Hospital Library Services Program (HLSP). This is a Newsletter for the Health Science Librarians, HLSP Liaisons, and Health Care Providers in South Central New York State.

Spring Activities

Hello everyone, and welcome to the Spring 2024 edition of HLSP News. I hope you were able to enjoy the Winter Season and that you're looking forward to an awesome Spring. Please enjoy this edition of HLSP News where I will share some of the great things happening with HLSP at SCRLC.

New Feature. We are happy to announce an exciting new feature in HLSP News. It's titled "Anatomy of a Library" and it's an opportunity for member hospital librarians and liaisons to share their library space. See the George Miner Mackenzie Medical Library at Bassett Healthcare below. We look forward to learning more about the hospital libraries in our region.

Electronic Resources. Usage for the STAT!Ref reference resources; STAT PEARLS NCLEX-RN Quiz Bank; and the New England Journal of Medicine is going well, and we continue to monitor those numbers. Check below for material, including a short instructional video for the quiz bank, that can be used to market these resources to your providers and administrators.

Learning. The Health, Wellness and Hospital Libraries Lunch and Learn series continues! We will hold the next Lunch and Learn program on May 21 on the topic of green cleaning in the workplace. For details, please see below.

Grant Applications. HLSP grant applications have been received from all HLSP members and grant checks have been distributed. If you have any questions about your grant funds, please reach out to me. Remember, dues will need to be paid before we can send the funds. For more information about the HLSP Grant program, please read below.

Paid Internship. The Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) is offering a paid Summer internship for grad students from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups through its National Center for Data Services (NCDS). For more about this internship opportunity, please see the Continuing Education section below.

If you have any questions about SCRLC, our HLSP benefits, or anything in this edition of HLSP News, please email me. And, if you would like to stay informed about HLSP happenings in between the quarterly editions of HLSP News, please submit a request to join our HLSP listserv.

All the Best,

Anatomy of a Library

HLSP Member Library Design

This new feature will give us a look at the hospital libraries in our region and beyond. We will highlight hospital and health services libraries through pictures, descriptions and maybe even videos. It's an opportunity to "see" and learn about another health services library as well as get ideas to add to your library.

Please keep in mind that all libraries look different. Some include a physical space (of varying sizes) while others exist solely online. Whatever your library looks like, we are interested in seeing it.

In this edition of HLSP News, we have Matt Roslund the Library and Knowledge Service Specialist at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown sharing images of the George Miner Mackenzie Medical Library. Please let Matt or me know if you have any questions.

Here's Matt in his office which is located in the George Miner Mackenzie Medical Library.

Librarian’s office and seating area – Matt's desk is in the corner of the office, popularly referred to as “the fishbowl” because it looks like a fish tank and was covered by fish stickers by his coworkers for one of his birthdays. Outside the office you can see two carts, one of which is used as a book drop and pick-up location for people who work outside of Matt's work hours, and another that holds the “disaster cart” of books that can be taken to clinical areas in an emergency that involves loss of power or internet. Matt is still working on the disaster cart, so it doesn’t have too many books on it yet. The seating area next to Matt's office is a popular place for people to hang out, read, or rest on lunch breaks as the chairs are very comfortable.

This is a shot of the library from the seating area. You can see the long table that has most of the computers on it, and the two larger seating areas in the back corners. These back corner seats are popular because people can stretch out while working, or work with others on a project. In the center back are the three shelves holding the circulating collection, and the shelves on the right hold reference books. The portrait on the back wall is Dr. George Miner Mackenzie, the namesake of our library. The bust below and to the right is of Dr. Mackenzie's wife.

A shot standing from the reference shelf. You can see Matt's office on the left. This shot shows the very nice wooden door to what used to be another part of the library, which has since been turned into a conference room. Although you can’t see it very well, behind the long table in the middle is the large copier/printer/scanner that is a popular feature of the library.

Elevator lobby – Through the metal door seen on the left in picture 3 is this small elevator lobby which is also part of the library space. There is a ‘standing desk’ with a computer in here (adjustable by piling up books under the monitor and keyboard), a book giveaway shelf, and lost and found space. There is also a bulletin board where Matt can post notices. The lower shelves you see are where Matt stores printer paper and other office supplies.

Another shot of the library. This shows the ‘archive’ shelf next to the librarian’s office. This archive holds old annual reports of the hospital, books published by Bassett physicians, and has other important materials.

Bassett Healthcare also offers an Intranet for all Bassett Healthcare providers and administrators. Here is an image of the home page showing the library services that are available through their Intranet page.

So, now that you've had a virtual tour of the George Miner Mackenzie Library where Matt works, let us know what you think. Are there features that you would like to add to your library?

Electronic Resources

SCRLC provides several electronic resources to HLSP members. If you aren't taking advantage of these resources, please reach out to me so we can make sure you're able to use them. And if you are using them and would like to know your usage numbers, please let me know and I'll obtain that information for you.

STAT!Ref

STAT PEARLS

New England Journal of Medicine

Last June, we resumed a subscription for reference resources for our HLSP members through STAT!Ref and the usage numbers have shown a steady increase since then. The list of reference resources that are included in the SCRLC subscription is available here.

Last June, we began offering all HLSP members a subscription for the NCLEX-RN Quiz Bank from STAT PEARLS and we are starting to see good usage numbers. We have a short video explaining the process to begin using the quiz bank.

SCRLC has provided a subscription to the New England Journal of Medicine, and it can be accessed by all staff members including doctors, nurses, technicians, administrators and anyone who can benefit from locating accurate medical information.

We also provide our members a subscription to 5 Ovid Journals on a cost share basis. If you are not already part of the cost share program for those 5 Ovid Journals and would like to know more about the program, please reach out to me for more details about this program.

Health, Wellness, and Hospital Libraries

Lunch and Learn Series

We have held 6 successful webinars in this Lunch and Learn series so far and we're planning additional programs for the Spring and into the Summer. The goal of this program is to provide information that can be useful for your job and introduce you to the other HLSP members as well as other SCRLC members including museums and other types of libraries. We also encourage you to include your providers in this program.

The next program will be held on May 21 on the topic of green cleaning in the workplace. Nellie Brown, Director of Workplace Health and Safety Programs at Cornell's ILR School, will present a webinar on how cleaning products in our workplaces can be done in a green way. You can register for this program here.

We continue to work on other programs including AI in a local hospital, vaccines/vaccine hesitancy, and ransomware/scams/hack in hospitals. Dates and times for those and other programs will be announced as soon as possible. Please check our website periodically for further announcements.

HLSP Grant Program

All grant applications have been received and checks have been mailed. As a reminder, the grant funds must be used for hospital library items and services and those items and services must be available to all users of the hospital library system. The users include all medical providers (physicians, nurses, technicians, etc.) and any administrators in the hospital. The HLSP grant program is designed to enhance the member hospital library's ability to improve patient care and not to supplement the resources of an individual.

To give an example, the funds can be used to purchase items like books or to pay for library services (such as ClinicalKey) as long as the items or services are available in the same way and using the same processes and procedures that are used for other library items and services. Similarly, the HLSP grant funds may be used to pay for a subscription to an electronic journal when the journal is available to all hospital individuals who have access to other hospital library materials.

I will be sending the final report forms to all member hospital library contacts in the near future. We ask that the forms be returned in May though you do have through the end of June to spend the grant funds. The information in the final reports is used for us to complete our final reports.

Continuing Education

NNLM Internship Opportunity

The ability to provide data services is now a part of many job openings and new opportunities in health sciences and academic libraries. In turn, the goal of the NCDS Internship Program is to provide practical experiences to interns that include the soft and hard skills needed to enter data librarian positions, including working on a team, understanding the data lifecycle, and working with data. In an effort to diversify the profession, the National Center for Data Services (NCDS) of the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) provides internships for people from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. The goal of this program is to introduce students from historically excluded racial and ethnic groups to data librarianship in a health sciences context. These paid internships offer opportunities to gain practical experience while working with a mentor in a guided environment on structured, data-related projects. There are multiple projects available from our site partners. These projects involve structured activities including data cleaning, structuring, analysis, or visualization, or a guided in-depth project in data curation. Each intern will be provided with training and mentoring throughout. The practical experiences developed during the internship will provide participants with skills needed to be competitive for data librarian positions.

The internships are flexible and unique in that they allow students to participate either on-site or remote. Depending on the location and interest of the intern, these internships will be in-person or virtual (possibly including a site visit), and with a host library or within the NCDS. **All internships are currently 100% virtual.**

For more information about this internship program, please check out NNLM webpage with the details.
