Remembering Andrew Winsky
Andrew Winsky and his twin brother Stephen were born January 1, 1930 in Philadelphia, PA. Their parents were Julia and Egnaty Winsky. The twins joined older brothers John and Harry. The family lived in Philadelphia, PA and Camden, NJ. They attended St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church in Philadelphia. The twins were altar servers, sang in the church choir and were members of an Adult All-Male Russian Chorus.
After graduating from Temple University, the twins went to the US Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI. They were assigned to the Washington Military District. At that time, they began attending St. Nicholas, DC.
On June 19, 1954 in Philadelphia, Andrew married Lucy Woronovich. The couple had met at the Philadelphia St. Nicholas Church. They eventually settled in Greenbelt, MD. There they raised their children Denise (Royal) and Daniel.
Andrew was a meritorious civilian employee of the Department of Defense. He proudly served to defend our Nation. He retired in 1986.
Over the years, Andy and Lucy helped St. Nicholas DC with a variety of activities. Annually, Andy would cut their pussy willow trees to provide the church with pussy willows on Palm Sunday. The couple is best known for making holodets (jellied pigs feet) which were sold at the church fall bazaars.
Andy passed on May 27, 1993. He is buried at Oakland Cemetery in Philadelphia. Fr. Constantine White was the officiant at the funeral and burial.
At St. Nicholas there is a St. Andrew icon dedicated to the memory of Andrew Winsky. The icon is located on the pillar at the back of the church - left side - facing inward to the center. May Andrew's memory be eternal.
