See The World, Study Abroad!

International Academic Programs invites Seawolves to explore the opportunities to Study Abroad! We offer many unique programs that can give your student exposure to language, experiential learning, internships and much more.

Through study abroad, students can receive credits towards their major, minor, upper division and Stony Brook Curriculum (SBC) requirement with appropriate planning with their academic advisor. Studying abroad provides countless benefits that can help set your student apart in graduate school and employment applications!

We encourage students to become familiar with the various types of programs, appropriate program selection, the application process, and all things program preparation from academic planning to packing! By navigating our website, students and their families can better understand specific program details, eligibility and other resources regarding funding programs and academic planning.

We are happy to speak in further detail to be sure a program is the right fit and help them go Far Beyond!

Tips from Students

What's it like to be a student at SBU? Hear it from a Seawolf!

We hear from Siya Gandhi, a sophomore and Psychology major and Peer Support intern. She had the chance to work this Family Weekend and tells us a bit about that experience, and gives families some tips about what to do when visiting campus.

Sprinkling Support: Salt Shaker Parenting

In this issue, we are introducing this new section featuring advice and tips from the Family Services and Support team to help you best support your student through their academic journey.

A hand using a salt shaker

We have all heard of the helicopter parent, one who is hovering over their child to make sure they are doing everything right, and now there is talk of a bulldozer parent who wants to remove any adversity from their child’s life-hoping for a continuous state of smooth sailing! While we all want our students to be happy and stress-free, we also understand how important it is for our students to build resilience and establish coping mechanisms of their own during their time here at Stony Brook. As members of Family Services and Support, we are looking for a more subtle, nuanced way for families to support their students, helping them to build confidence and independence. So how about being a "Salt Shaker" parent?

A salt shaker involves a sprinkling of salt to enhance the recipe, but we all know too much salt can overpower and ruin a great dish! Our metaphor of being a Salt Shaker parent means sprinkling your child with support, questions, and love in a gentle, subtle way. As family members, we hope for the best for our children, but coming in too strongly with extensive advice or interrogations can be overwhelming to students and may cause them to shut down.

Here are some ideas for Salt Shaker parenting questions:

  • How have classes been going?
  • What kind of clubs does Stony Brook have that you might be interested in?
  • Is college studying different from high school studying?

When they respond, try to just LISTEN, without giving immediate advice. They will appreciate your attention and trust!
