In Brief

In this edition of the Monday Morning Messenger,  TPGA highlights the top violations that U.S. DOT roadside officials find with hazmat vehicles, so you, your company, and your drivers can prepare your propane delivery trucks before the busy heating season.

Speaking of roadways, TPGA will be traveling to Nacogdoches next week for our Fall 2022 board & committee meetings. Please see more details in our second story of the morning. If you plan to join us, hit that RSVP button.

News headlines are reading "U.S. Home Heating Bills Expected To Surge This Winter." That may be the case for electric and natural gas, but we have better news for propane, at least according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA) of the U.S. Department of Energy. Read more in our third story of the morning.

Lastly, the threat of a rail strike from one of the biggest unions in the country has resurfaced. In our last story of the morning, get an update on the situation.

Top Hazmat Transportation Violations

According to  Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)'s data for the last calendar year (as of 3rd quarter of 2022) shows the top five hazmat violations in the U.S. were:

  1. Package not secure in vehicle
  2. No copy of the USDOT HM registration
  3. No or improper shipping papers (carrier)
  4. Shipping paper accessibility
  5. Vehicle not placarded as required

As deliveries start to increase in preparation for the heating season, make sure your drivers and company have the above squared away.

EIA Predicts Energy Prices to Surge This Heating Season Except for Propane

The Energy Information Administration (EIA) of the U.S. Department of Energy predicts electricity customers to pay 10% more this winter, natural gas customers 28% more, and propane an average of 5% more.

The EIA reports as of September 30, the propane spot price at the Mont Belvieu Hub, had dropped to 87 cents/gal, which is 40% less than the same time in 2021. Last winter, high winter heating consumption and increased global demand for propane contributed to low U.S. propane inventories and high propane prices.

Rail Strike Threat Back After

Union Deal Rejected

"One of the nation's largest railroad unions has rejected a contract with freight carriers, once again raising the possibility of a strike and the profound economic implications that go with it," reports the Washington Post.

The Post goes on to report that this comes after the White House facilitated a deal between several unions and rail carriers last month, averting a walkout that could have "debilitated" the U.S. supply chain.

The rail officials and the union have agreed to continue negotiations until November 19, 2022. According to the Post, railroads are expected to operate normally while talks are underway.

The National Propane Gas Association (NPGA) reports that it will continue to monitor the situation and engage with its partners in the rail industry, executive branch, and Capitol Hill as necessary.
