September Membership Class is this Sunday, September 15th
Maplewood UMC will hold a Membership Class at 12:15 p.m., after worship, in the Adult Sunday School area in the lower level of the education wing. If you have been thinking about becoming a member of the congregation, this is your opportunity!
The class will cover the basics of Methodism, the theology, history, and structure of our denomination. We’ll talk about the congregation, Maplewood’s vision, values, and culture. And we will dive into the membership promises every member makes when joining a United Methodist congregation.
To sign up for the class, let Pastor Andy know today, Thursday, September 12th at pastor@maplewoodumc.org.

Welcome Fall at the Community Unity Dinner Sept 19th
We hope many of you will come and visit with community members at our very popular Community Unity Dinners. This dinner we will also have voter registration thanks to Nancy Thompson, former President of the League of Women Voters. Encourage friends and family members and young people to come and register. The deadline to register to vote in the November election is October 9. How can you help at the dinner? Sunday there will be a sign up sheet where you can sign up to work in the kitchen, be a greeter, be on the clean up crew or bring cookies or desserts. Thank you for supporting this ministry of MUMC. (See flyer below)

We will continue telling stories this week, week three of the “All in the Family” worship series. We’ve heard the story of the eviction from Eden and Cain and Abel. The next story in Genesis is a well known one - the story of Noah.
There is actually a whole chapter in between the Cain and Abel story and the beginning of the Noah story. It is a chapter composed entirely of genealogy, tracing the lineage of Adam and Eve down through the generations to Noah himself. Adam. Seth. Enosh. Kenan. Mahalal’el. Yared. Enoch. Methusaleh. Lamech. Noah.
It isn’t the only place a genealogy appears in the Bible, of course. There are lists of kings and their sons. There are lists that show the lineage of the priests. And one of the Gospels even records the genealogy of Jesus. Have you ever wondered why the Holy Scriptures include long lists of genealogy? Simply put, it is a part of our story.
Our stories are shared across the generations. The stories are renewed as each generation hears them, then tells them to the next. And even though we do not know the details of many of the names in those lists, the genealogies serve as a reminder of the cross-generational significance of the stories we tell.
So we arrive at Noah this week, ten generations away from Adam. Noah’s story is one of those that is almost universally known. It conveys some truths that transcend particular religions and connect people together beyond particular belief structures and across the generations.

Report from the Trustees
If you have driven by the church this week you would have noticed part of the church yard being dug up. We still have a leak coming into the church from under the Flora basement steps. This process will cause the flow of rain water to drain away from the church building and keep the basement totally dry.
