IN-FOCUS

Men of Color Initiative Kicks Off in Spring 2025

The college experience should embrace a sense of belonging and strong cultural identity, but too often can have barriers that make it difficult for students to succeed. The Men of Color Takeoff Initiative at LCCC is designed to remove barriers and create a community where male students of color can enroll smoothly, set goals to success and complete their program of study to launch into a career or transfer program.

Please join us to kick off the year with a get-to-know-you welcome event at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 20, in the JEDI Center, second level of the Academic Resources Center (ARC). At this event, you can learn more about opportunities to help you succeed – scholarships, mentoring, career development, activities and more.

During this spring semester, men of color will be invited to a series of events and to participate in a community of mutual support and empowerment. If you identify as a man of color – African American, Hispanic, Native American, Asian American, etc. – we hope you join us to learn more.

Specific initiatives include:

  • Aspira First-Year Experience seminar that covers topics including motivation, goal setting, critical thinking and career exploration
  • Men of Color student club
  • Latin@ Leadership student club
  • Events including welcome in February, career exploration in March, wellness focus in April and an end-of-semester celebration in May

The initiative is led by Tonisha Taylor, Dean of Humanities, Social Sciences and Inclusion, and Roxanne Wright-Watson, associate professor of math. For information and questions, contact rwrightwatson@lccc.edu or ttaylor13@lccc.edu.

ADMINISTRATIVE ANNOUNCEMENTS

Viewing Your Class Schedule

To view your class schedule, including meeting dates, times, and room locations, follow the steps here.

Spring Refund and Withdrawal Dates

Once registered for a course, a student is expected to attend classes according to the schedule assigned. If a student finds it necessary to drop a course, add a course or change from one course or section to another, the Add/Drop/Total Withdrawal Form must be completed and submitted. Failure to do so may result in failing grades or loss of credit. A student may add or change from one course to another only during the add/drop period. For exact dates, reference the refund and withdrawal schedule. Refer to the grading policy section for regulations dealing with the dropping of courses.

Student Photo IDs

Student ID badges are used to obtain access to college services like the library, computer labs, testing center, etc. In addition to discounts to area eateries like Back Home Bagels and The Red Tomato, student IDs can be used to check out library materials or access the campus gym. Students must be enrolled in at least one class to obtain a student ID. You will need to present a valid, government-issued photo ID and your L#. All students should obtain a picture identification card from the Office of Registration and Student Records located in the Student Services Center, office 122, at Main Campus or at the Donley or Morgan Centers. Click here for the upcoming schedule.

Allentown Parking Authority Offers Special Rates

LCCC students and Donley Center staff and faculty will have access to special parking rates in downtown Allentown when attending class or working at the Donley Center, thanks to a partnership with the Allentown Parking Authority (APA). Parking will be offered at the Allentown Transportation Center Deck at 603 W. Linden Street (Entry at 110 N 6th Street).

LCCC students, staff faculty will pay $60 to park approximately 20 hours per week or 70-90 hours monthly. You must apply for monthly parking permits on the APA website and follow the directions. Be sure to select “LCCC part-time staff or student – ATC” for the $60/month rate. You must submit proof of vehicle registration, drivers license and student ID. Noncredit students who don’t have a student ID can request a verification letter by sending a request to donley@lccc.edu. The college will verify enrollment and employment monthly to report to the APA for this special rate.

Purchases can be made after Feb. 1. Accepted forms of payment are credit/debit or prepaid Visa. The permit will automatically renew each month, pending enrollment/employment verification. Make sure you select the correct option to purchase, select the right garage (ATC Deck) and upload your verification documents. Follow instructions on the website and subsequent communication from the APA.

Send questions to offstreetupdates@allentownparking.com or 610-841-9090, ext. 2. Further information can be found on the Donley Center page on the LCCC website.

May and August Graduation Application Reminder

Students planning to graduate in May must submit an application for graduation by Saturday, Feb. 1. Students planning to graduate in August and attend the May Commencement Ceremony must also submit an application for graduation by Saturday, Feb. 1. To determine if you are eligible to graduate, check your progress in Degree Works. Applying for graduation does not mean that you need to attend the May Commencement Ceremony - that choice will be presented to you at a later date. There are no ceremonies held for December and August, but those graduates will be invited to attend the May commencement ceremony at the PPL Center in Allentown.

Preferred/Chosen Name

LCCC recognizes that students may use first names other than their legal first names to identify themselves. By selecting a preferred/chosen first name, the individual is agreeing to be referred to by this first name in college-related systems (i.e. Banner, Canvas and DegreeWorks) and documents as well as email communications, interactions and any processes in which names are used to address an individual, except when the use of the legal name is required by law or the college. Students can request to change their preferred first name in Self-Service BannerWeb on the MyLCCC Portal. Detailed instructions are available on the IT Knowledgebase. To the extent possible, changes will be reflected across LCCC systems within 48 hours after submission. A preferred/chosen first name is not a nickname or a legal name change. Students who are legally changing their name should follow the instructions here. Student FAQs can be found here.
