The Brent Henley Youth Leadership Program's (BHYLP) second cohort is now midway through the 2023-2024 curriculum, and the journey, so far, has been amazing. Through a series of immersive experiences, the program has offered these selected high school juniors a profound opportunity to engage with various segments of society, fostering holistic development and leadership skills. Class day topics covered to date were:

First Responders Day

This was an eye-opening experience for the students. The day provided a glimpse into the tireless efforts and unwavering commitment of those on the frontlines. BHYLP students interacted with firefighters, sheriff and police officers, paramedics, and other emergency service providers. They gained insights into the challenges and rewards of these crucial roles, fostering an appreciation for the dedication and sacrifice of these individuals.

Education Day

Education Day served as a platform for BHYLP students to explore the vital role education plays in shaping a community. The day included visits to UL-L, SLCC, and the WD and Mary Baker Smith Career Center, discussions with educators, and exposure to teaching methodologies, which all broadened the students' perspectives on what our community has to offer for their post-secondary education.

Arts & Culture Day

Arts & Culture Day celebrated the rich tapestry of artistic expression and cultural heritage within the community. On this day, students visited Acadiana Center for the Arts, Basin Arts, and Acadiana Open Channel in Downtown Lafayette, as well as learned about the massive undertaking that is Festival International de Louisiane - the largest international music festival in our country.

Economic Development Day

Economic Development Day provided a lens into the intricate mechanisms driving the community's economic vitality. Hosted by Lafayette Economic Development Authority, the students engaged with local businesses, entrepreneurs, and economic development leaders, and learned about the relationship between business growth and community prosperity. By the end of the day, the students used their newfound knowledge to create and present their concepts for a mock familiarization tour for a prospective business looking to locate in Acadiana.

Upcoming class day topics are on local government, state government, environmental concerns, and healthcare. The collective impact of these themed days over the 9-month course is transformative for the Brent Henley Youth Leadership Program's participants. They will not only have gained knowledge but will also have cultivated critical thinking and a deeper understanding of the multifaceted challenges and opportunities that exists within their society. As these young leaders continue to evolve and channel their experiences, the ripple effect of their engagement will undoubtedly shape a brighter future for their community.
