In this article we explore the captivating features and ecological importance of the Sacramento Delta, emphasizing the need for its preservation and sustainable management.

A Haven for Biodiversity: The Sacramento Delta is a haven for biodiversity, supporting a remarkable array of plant and animal species. Its unique blend of freshwater and saltwater creates a rich and diverse habitat that sustains over 500 species of fish, including the endangered Delta smelt and Chinook salmon. The wetlands and marshes provide crucial nesting grounds for waterfowl and migratory birds, making it a popular spot for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Rare and threatened species, such as the Swainson's hawk and the salt marsh harvest mouse, find refuge in this ecologically significant region.

The Sacramento River

Rising in the Kamath Mountains, the Sacramento River is the largest and most important river in California for both people and nature. The Sacramento flows south for nearly 400 miles collecting water from snowmelt and springs from surrounding mountain ranges to supply 35% of the states developed water supply. But today the Sacramento is highly degraded relative to its former condition. As much as 90% of the river’s forest have been cleared and its water, while not heavily dammed is largely diverted for agriculture and municipal uses. As a result, fish and bird populations have plummeted and the river is no longer free to carve its own path across the valley floor and create the habitats that native species depend upon.
