MONDAY MEMO
Marie and 1st graders Riley, Cora, and Lauren were all smiles after finishing a medium lap at Race Back to School last week.
Greetings!

Unfortunately many of our students and teachers are dealing with COVID this week, please note the remote learning and communication guidelines below, and thank you for staying flexible with us as we support each other.

Happy Monday,
Nelia
NOTES
RACE BACK TO SCHOOL
We had a great turnout of participants and volunteers at the Race Back to School last week, thank you everyone. You can see pictures of some of our racers here. If you sought pledges, please collect those funds and update your pledge form, and turn it in to Krystal in the office by next Monday, October 23.
ATTENDANCE
When students are going to be absent from school, please email Krystal (who tracks attendance for all of us) and their teacher/advisor (who can then prepare to offer any support needed).
REMOTE LEARNING FOR COVID
Remote learning will only be an option for students who have tested positive for COVID and are well enough that they would otherwise be at school. At all levels there will be no work or participation expected on the day of the positive test, or until the student feels well enough to participate.

Kindergarten-2nd Grade: Reading and possible math games will be shared by communication with the parents, they may be either online or in print.

3rd-5th Grade: Lessons will be assigned via Google Classroom to include links to math, reading, and writing assignments (stay tuned for invitations to that platform soon). Interventionists will be included in such planning in order to meet the needs of their students specifically. Teachers will provide feedback on the work within a week of the student's return to school.
  • Math will include an online lesson and an assignment in the student's book.
  • Reading will be either a current novel study or a link to a recorded lesson or Readworks.
  • Writing will vary according to what is happening in the classroom.

6th-8th Grade: The advisor will identify exactly which classes the following day should be joined remotely by conferring with all teachers on the schedule (never study hall or PE, rarely electives or music, sometimes not science or writers workshop, for example), and a class buddy to bring a dedicated chromebook to each class throughout the day. The advisor will send a link and schedule to the student, the parent, the buddy, and all the relevant teachers. If internet is limited at home, the absent student should contact teachers to explain and ask what they should do instead.
SOCCER FROM COACH SEAN
The following are all 7-8th grade games:
  • Today at home vs Coventry, 4:30 (players should find Sean in the pavilion after school to get some homework done before changing to warm up).
  • Monday 10/24 at home vs Troy, 5:00 (players should find Sean in the pavilion after school to get some homework done before changing to warm up).
  • Wednesday 10/26 @ Coventry, 4:30
  • Thursday 10/27 @ Troy, 5:00

This Friday at 3:45 pm, we welcome all parents, teachers, and alumni to play vs students at Riverside. Come join in the fun, we will have hot cocoa and a fire in the pavilion during and after the game.
3-5TH GRADE SWIMMING
Our 3-5th graders will be swimming this Friday, October 21, please remember to pick them up at NVU at 3:15. Our last swim date will be October 28.
HALLOWEEN AT RIVERSIDE
The Student Council will be hosting a halloween party/haunted house/dance at Riverside on Friday, October 28 with an underwater theme. The Haunted House and Party will take place in the house and the barn from 5:15-6:45 for all students. 6-8th graders are welcome to stay for a dance from 7:00-9:00 pm.

School day festivities will happen on Monday, October 31. That day students are encouraged to wear costumes, which they will show off in an all-school assembly that morning. There will surely be extra candy and treats around school on Halloween, if you have any concerns about how much your child eats, please work with them directly to set your expectations. Candy is also allowed for sharing on the day after halloween, but beyond Tuesday, November 1 we ask that families support us going back to a culture of healthier snacks at school.
RIVERSIDE APPAREL ORDERS
Show your school community pride! An order form for Riverside apparel was sent home with students last week. Please plan to return it with payment by Friday, November 4. Orders will be in before the winter holidays.
WINTER FRIDAYS
November-December: K-8th grade skating, three houses each Friday, the other house will go to Kingdom Gymnastics. So it will be helpful to know which house your child is in (ask them!): Aqua, Caelum, Ignis, or Terra. Rental skates will be available at a small charge to your school store account, your child will simply need to know their shoe size. On the half days the plans are a bit different: Nov. 18 (also 6-8th Bio Fair in the morning) K-5th will go skating while older students do something special on campus, and on Dec 16 (also K-8th grade Mythology Day) 6-8th will go skating while younger students do something special on campus before the vacation.

January-February: K-8th grade downhill skiing/riding or cross-country skiing. The logistics for these programs are intense, thank you for filling out the google form last week (do it now if you haven't yet!) to tell us about your family's preferences and choices. Additional paperwork based on your choices will be going home this week, please complete it carefully and thoroughly by next Monday, October 23. This deadline may seem really quick, and it's what we need in order to fit into Burke Mountain's school program logistics/timeline.
SELF STUDY UPDATE
We (faculty, staff, trustees, parent and alumni parent volunteers) are in the middle of a 2-year reflection process that we hope will conclude with earning our re-accreditation by the New England Association of Schools & Colleges. A couple updates at this point:
  • Here is a summary of the discussions and reports written by those who worked on five Foundation Standard areas (governance, enrollment, resources, qualified adults, and health and safety). Seeing clear themes of similar kinds of achievements and challenges demonstrates authenticity and some clear paths toward being even better at what we do.
  • Two peer administrators (Matthew Hicks from the Shaker Road School in Concord, NH and Sara Primo from the Friends School of Portland, ME) have read our five reports and associated documentation, and were on campus today in order to verify what they read and to help us celebrate what we do well and strategize what we might want to prioritize doing better. If you see them on campus, please welcome and converse with them.
  • Program Committees who will discuss standards more closely related to students and learning, are at work and will be drafting reports this winter. Thank you so much to their chairs: Peter Sahlin, Joel Gilbert, Marie Sullivan, Carrie Stahler, Caroline Thompson.
COUNSELING AVAILABLE ON CAMPUS
Licensed Counselor Ellen Moore is on campus Tuesdays to provide support for students who may need someone to talk to. She has taken some students on as clients and meets with them during the school day, and others just meet with her during the day to chat or let off steam. If your child feels like they need someone to talk to, you can tell them that Ellen is available before lunch on Tuesdays. We’ll be announcing this to the students as well.
BLESSED WITH HIGH SCHOOL CHOICES
We in the NEK are so fortunate to offer our children/students an opportunity to choose the high school that is the best fit for them, their learning styles, and their goals. We hope that families recognize this as an opportunity to practice mature decision making, and take advantage of the ways we can all learn more about the different high schools.
  • Admission Visits to 8th Grade Advisory: LI on Oct 24, SJA postponed to Oct 31.
  • Meet and Chat with Brian Bloomfield, LI Head of School: Oct 27, 5:00 at Riverside (6-8th grade families welcome)

  • St. Johnsbury Academy Open House: Thursday, Nov. 3, 6:30 pm, details and registration here
  • Lyndon Institute Open House: Wednesday, Nov. 9, 5:00-7:30, details and registration here
ABUSE PREVENTION TRAINING
