In June 2023 the Southeast Chapter of the ICAA, in collaboration with the North Carolina Chapter, hosted the ICAA Southeast Bunny Mellon Garden Symposium - An Exploration of Southeastern Landscapes: Mountains to Prairies. Designers, students, and enthusiasts gathered for a three-day conference in Lake Toxaway, North Carolina, enjoying tours and lectures by preeminent experts in garden and landscape design.

The Symposium's third lecture was presented by Melissa Reavis, landscape architect and residential studio director at Hollander Design Landscape Architects. In her talk, Melissa encourages landscape designers to design healthy landscapes that benefit insects, plants, animals, and humans alike. Drawing on the firm's inspiring design portfolio of residential properties around the world, Reavis shows how biodiversity in residential garden settings can be designed within any aesthetic and enhance the overall experience of a landscape and its connection to architecture.

During the fall of 2023, participants journeyed with the ICAA to the countryside of Yorkshire, England, as part of the travel program Great Houses, Estates & Gardens of Yorkshire, arranged by Classical Excursions. Tour participant and architect Steven Spandle recounts the visit to one of the destinations, Bramham Park, in this article, describing the fascinating history of the estate and the distinguishing design features of the house, the landscape, and the surrounding follies and temples.

Kate Hersch, another participant on the ICAA's travel program Great Houses, Estates & Gardens of Yorkshire, captures the full experience of traveling with the ICAA in this article, chronicling the stunning estates and gardens, the unforgettable private dinners, and the camaraderie that was shared among participants. Here, she highlights pleasures both rustic and refined, and celebrates the warm graciousness of the hosts who opened their doors to the tour's collection of architects, designers, and enthusiasts.

ICAA FILMS: DESIGN IN MIND
Unlocking the Mysteries of Place with Gil Schafer, the latest entry in the ICAA’s Design in Mind documentary series, is now airing nationally on public television stations.

In Unlocking the Mysteries of Place Gil leads viewers from his firm’s renovated design studio in Manhattan, to a Hudson Valley home inspired by English estates, and to a summer house on the shores of Lake Champlain. Influenced by the elegance and charm of classical and vernacular American architecture, and considerate of the needs of contemporary living, Gil reflects on his design process and the particular qualities that define an unforgettable place.

Classicism, at its heart, looks towards the future – shaping spaces built to last, communities that foster innovation, and built environments imbued with enduring beauty. At the ICAA, we champion this intrinsic quality of classical design – offering programming that both connects us to the past and inspires us to think towards the future.

Through interactive, hands-on coursework, our New Heights, Grand Tour, and Cast Hall programs inspire thousands of young minds to develop an appreciation for classical precedent while inspiring them to think mindfully about the communities that surround them. From there, our Summer Studio in Classical Architecture and University Workshops take our college-age students’ learning to the next level – immersing them in thought-provoking curricula that inspire them to apply their skills in a contemporary context while connecting to the rich legacy of the past.

In 2023 we’ve taken incredible strides to shape a future where classical architecture and allied arts continue to inspire, elevate, and connect people from all walks of life. To build upon this momentum, we hope you will consider making a contribution to the ICAA’s End of Year Campaign. Thanks to the generosity of our Board of Directors, your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar, doubling its impact. In order to have the greatest effect and have your gift count towards this match, we encourage you to make a gift by December 15th.

Every contribution, no matter the size, will play a vital role in preserving the rich heritage of classicism, ensuring its longevity into the future.
