NPR's Ailsa Chang speaks with civil engineering professor Brett Sanders about what's needed in terms of infrastructure planning to make communities more resilient to serious floods and storms.

Chair's Message

As you will see in this edition of the CEE@UCI Newsletter, our faculty and students are continuing to win accolades for their work, with Adeleye named a “Talented 12” by Chemical & Engineering News, AghaKouchak and Alborzi winning the ASCE Norman medal for their work on levee fragility in a changing climate, Foufoula-Georgiou elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Lemnitzer honored by ASCE for her geotechnical work, and Qomi winning an NSF CAREER award. CEE@UCI is helping solve some of the major challenges of our time, from building more resilient infrastructure to battling more frequent forest fires. We are doing so in an increasingly challenging environment, which includes a global economic slowdown, war in Ukraine (but also in the Tigray, South Sudan, Syria, Afghanistan and Yemen) and the waning of the COVID-19 crisis. Let us continue to work together to build a better, more equitable and sustainable world, in California, the U.S. and abroad.

Sincerely,

Jean-Daniel Saphores

Professor and Chair
