Photo of a Yellow-throated Warbler nest by Mimi Wiggin.
Fallen leaves form a vital part of the life cycle of many larvae and make warm homes for many mammals and insects over winter. They feed the soil and create habitat and opportunities for many living beings to survive at the edges of the cliff we have pushed them to. The earths winter blanket. Leaf blowers kill these opportunities and fry the larvae. If you must get them off your paths, a good stiff brush or rake does a good job. My Tutor, Jeremy Irons
by Roger Robbins
T.S. Eliot scared me. As a green college student, with no sense of subtle, reading The Great Poet was like hitting a stonewall. All I felt was confusion; all I remembered was the name "Prufrock".
Fifty years later, that changed, thanks to the gifted actor Jeremy Irons. With a book of Eliot in hand, I listened to Jeremy Irons read the poems. His flawless cadence, his studied pauses, his "attack" of each poem, brought Eliot's work to life.
Soon, I understood Eliot's poems were about real people and daily life. I chuckled at "Aunt Helen"; I recognized the view from "Morning at the Window"; and from "Mr. Apollinax", when I read of the dowager Mrs. Phlaccus, and of Professor and Mrs. Cheetah, I said "I know these people!"
