Next Steps in Initiating New Changes in Broadway Worship

In a unanimous vote on Tuesday evening, February 23, the board approved a motion to plan for and initiate two reimagined services, inspired by traditional and contemporary worship and our current unified service.

The timeline below for planning and initiating the services enables Audra Sergel, our new Music Director, to worship with us for four weeks as we

honor Holy Week, celebrate Easter, and reserve space on the church calendar for all hands-on

deck during the week of the Habitat Garage Sale.

  • March 24. 8:00 a.m. Palm Sunday. The Daybreak Service resumes in the Loft (outdoors as weather permits). Ed Varnum leads the music, and David Shirey preaches.

  • March 31. Easter Sunday. 8 a.m. Daybreak Service. 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. identical services with brass.

  • April 9 and 10. 6 pm. Tuesday and Wednesday. World Cafes are designed to elicit participants’ thoughts and desires for the reimagined services. Details on the focus and content of the two Cafes and instructions on signing up will be in next week’s email and Sunday morning announcements.

  • Commencement of the reimagined services and announcement of the modified Sunday morning schedule will follow. Date TBD.

Easter Lily Sign-Up

Seasoned Spirits meet on March 11.

Austin View, the executive director of Show-Me Central Habitat for Humanity, gave an informative presentation about Habitat for Humanity. We enjoyed having Austin’s wife, Abagael, and their son, Teddy, join us. Please save the date for our next meeting, April 8, and watch for the sign-up soon.

Sunday, March 17, at noon, following worship, we will dedicate the Butterfly Magnolia Tree on the southwest corner of our Memorial Garden.

This is in loving memory of Heather Harlan's son Micah Bacus. The memorial is sponsored by The Children's Grove of Columbia; The mission is to inspire a culture of kindness to support the mental and emotional well-being of our youth.

Plan Ahead: March 24, 2024

Come experience Daybreak, Broadway's early morning worship service as it begins anew, on Palm Sunday, March 24, 2024, at 8 am in The Loft. Ed Varnum will provide music on guitar and David Shirey will preach. Join us for a simple yet profound start to the day.

Join your church family on March 20th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for Lenten Vespers and Kids' Yoga Next Wednesday.

The ‘resilience’ portion follows as we gather in Fellowship Hall for a shared meal. Broadway members testify about how they experienced resiliency through adversity.

Starting at 5:30 pm in the cinema room, kids will stretch and grow, learning about rest and resilience through movement.

Reimagined Worship Services

Broadway Cafés on April 9 and 10, 6 p.m.

In a unanimous vote on Feb. 23, the board approved a motion to plan and initiate two reimagined services inspired by traditional and contemporary worship and our current unified service.

The proposal calls for “our taking the time to plan services we will look forward to with anticipation and enthusiasm. The specifics of the services (time, order of worship, music, leadership, etc.) will be solicited in a World Café format (one for the new traditional service and one for the contemporary), during which members will be invited to offer their thoughts, hopes, and desires for the respective services by sharing aspects of each worship style that enables and enriches their encounter with God. At both Cafés, participants will also be invited to share elements of the Unified Service that have blessed and enriched their worship that they would like to incorporate into Broadway’s future worship.”

RSVP below. You can also call or email the church office at (573) 4445-5312 or bcchurch@broadwaychristian.net or sign up at the Engage Table on Sunday mornings.

Thoughts and Prayers

For Julie Erickson and family on the passing of her husband Jay Erickson on Monday, March 11. Memorial service is yet to be determined.

Thank You

Our heartfelt gratitude to all of you who shared your messages and prayers of support in the death of my sister, Norma Jean DeMarco, who died peacefully at the end of December. Norma Jean adored children and was the Executive Director of two child development centers in her lifetime career, touching the lives of hundreds of children and their families with her gifts and passion for education and growth. We were the beneficiaries of her wisdom and expertise as she was nanny to our grandson, Julian, throughout his first year of life.

Some of you got to meet Norma Jean while she lived with us and attended services at Broadway. She was so appreciative of the awesome hospitality and classic Broadway Spirit that she experienced any time she attended worship. Many thanks to the Care Link team who do such an excellent job of caring and sharing concern on behalf of the Broadway family, and to our amazing staff who extended their gifts of caring to Norma Jean as she went through some very challenging times. Your prayers and kindness are so appreciated!

With deep gratitude,

Coletta, Bob and family

The musical "Footloose" will be performed at Stephens College on March 15th and 17th.

When Ren and his mother moved from Chicago to a small farming town, he had to prepare for the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher. To the rocking rhythm of its Oscar- and Tony-nominated score, Footloose celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people while guiding them with an open mind. Purchase tickets for this production. Performances: March 15, 16, 21, and 22 at 7:30 p.m., March 17 at 2 p.m.

Concert at Calvary Episcopal Church in downtown Columbia on Sunday, March 17th, 2024.

Music and Poetry by Thomas McKenney and Patrick Overton with a special performance by Marika Kyriakos. Two compositions will be performed and discussed: "Conciliation" for SATB and "Three Songs" for Soprano and Electronic Accompaniment.
