Title: "Embracing Mercy: Reflections on St. Nerses Shnorhali's Prayer of Compassion and Forgiveness"

Father Haroutioun Tachejian delivered this sermon on Friday, March 8, 2024, during the Husgoon Vigil services at St. James.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

As we gather in the sacred space of prayer during this Great Lenten season, let us reflect upon the profound words of St. Nerses Shnorhali, the great Armenian saint, whose prayer resonates deeply with the essence of our faith and the spirit of repentance.

This prayer is the 23rd in the series of 24 prayers known as the "I Confess with Faith" prayers.

All-merciful Lord, have mercy on all who believe in you,

My family and others,

Those known to me and unknown, those living and those dead.

Grant also forgiveness to my enemies and those who hate me

for the wrongs they have committed against me

And turn them from the malice which they bear for me

to become worthy of your compassion.

Have mercy upon your creation,

And on me, a manifold sinner."

In his prayer, St. Nerses invokes the boundless mercy of our Lord, addressing Him as the "All-merciful." This title acknowledges God's infinite compassion and kindness towards His creation. It reminds us that no matter how far we may have strayed or how many times we have faltered, God's mercy remains ever-present, ready to embrace us in our brokenness.

St. Nerses entreats the Lord's mercy not only for himself but for all who believe in Him. This inclusivity reflects the universality of God's love, which extends to every corner of the earth and encompasses all of humanity. It reminds us that we are bound together in a community of faith, where each person is valued and cherished in the eyes of God.

Furthermore, St. Nerses extends his prayer to encompass his family, friends, and even his enemies. He implores God to grant forgiveness to those who have wronged him, recognizing that reconciliation and healing can only begin through the grace of forgiveness. In doing so, he exemplifies the radical love and forgiveness taught by our Lord Jesus Christ, who prayed for His enemies even as He hung upon the cross.

The saint's prayer also acknowledges his own shortcomings, referring to himself as a "manifold sinner." This humble acknowledgment of human weakness serves as a reminder of our constant need for God's mercy and grace. It prompts us to examine our hearts and minds, to acknowledge our failings, and to seek reconciliation with God and with one another.

As we meditate on the words of St. Nerses Shnorhali's prayer, let us be inspired to cultivate a spirit of compassion, forgiveness, and humility in our own lives. Let us strive to emulate the example of Christ, who showed us the way of love and mercy through His life, death, and resurrection.

May the All-merciful Lord, who hears the prayers of His faithful servants, grant us the grace to forgive as we have been forgiven, to love as we have been loved, and to walk humbly in His presence all the days of our lives. Amen.

This year's CYMA trip planning is already underway! About 12-15 youth ages 18+ (or 17 and are a Senior/graduating high school) from all across the Western Diocese will participate in a pilgrimage to Armenia this summer. This 3-week trip serves to unify and strengthen our Armenian community by establishing a bridge between the diaspora's youth and our homeland and through participation in the social, religious, professional, and cultural life of Armenia.

The participants will live together in a house in Proshyan, a village about 10 minutes drive from Yerevan. Der Vazgen Boyadjian, parish priest of Holy Resurrection, Seattle, will join them on the trip and supervise the pilgrimage from start to finish, along with one or two previous CYMA participants to act as experienced chaperones. The trip dates will be finalized soon, most likely taking place at the end of June to mid-July. The trip includes a service project, traveling to religious, historic and cultural landmarks, and a week-long internship component, where the participants will gain first-hand experience in the professional field of their choice.

An information session will be held on March 18th, 2024 at 6:00 pm at St. Leon, Burbank or via Zoom. It is encouraged for prospective participants to attend in person. There will also be a fundraising event for participants in April, in order to assist with trip costs. More information on this will be presented at the information session.

ԱՒԵՏԱՐԱՆ ԸՍՏ ՄԱՏԹԷՈՍԻ 22:34-23:39

Երբ Փարիսեցիները լսեցին թէ Յիսուս Սադուկեցիները պապանձեցուց, իրարու քով եկան: Անոնցմէմէկը, Մովսիսական Օրէնքի մասնագէտ մը, Յիսուսը փորձելու համար հարցուց.

– Վարդապե՛տ, Օրէնքին մէջ ո՞րն է մեծագոյն պատուիրանը:

Յիսուս ըսաւ անոր.

– «Սիրէ՛ քու Տէր Աստուածդ ամբողջ սրտովդ, ամբողջ հոգիովդ եւ ամբողջ մտքովդ»: Ասիկա էմեծագոյն եւ կարեւորագոյն պատուիրանը: Երկրորդը ատոր նման է. «Սիրէ՛ ընկերդ քու անձիդ պէս»: Այս երկու պատուիրաններէն կախեալ են ամբողջ Օրէնքը եւ մարգարէներու ուսուցումները:

Երբ Փարիսեցիները հաւաքուեցան, Յիսուս հարցուց անոնց.

– Ի՞նչ կը խորհիք Քրիստոսին մասին: Որո՞ւն որդին է ան:

Անոնք պատասխանեցին.

– Դաւիթի:

Յիսուս ըսաւ անոնց.

– Ուրեմն ինչպէ՞ս Դաւիթ Սուրբ Հոգիէն ներշնչուած՝ զայն Տէր կը կոչէ ու կ’ըսէ.-

«Տէրը իմ Տիրոջս ըսաւ.-

Աջ կողմս նստէ,

մինչեւ որ թշնամիներդ ոտքերուդ տակ դնեմ

որպէս պատուանդան»:

Արդ, եթէ Դաւիթ զայն Տէր կը կոչէ, ինչպէ՞ս Քրիստոս անոր որդին կ’ըլլայ:

Ոչ ոք կրցաւ պատասխան տալ Յիսուսի, եւ այդ օրէն սկսեալ՝ ոեւէ մէկը չէր համարձակեր իրենհարցում ուղղել:

Ապա Յիսուս ժողովուրդին եւ իր աշակերտներուն ըսաւ.

– Մովսէսի աթոռը նստան Օրէնքի ուսուցիչներն ու Փարիսեցիները: Իրենց ըսածներունհնազանդեցէք եւ կատարեցէք զանոնք, սակայն մի՛ ընէք ինչ որ իրենք կ’ընեն․ որովհետեւ անոնք կըսորվեցնեն, բայց չեն կատարեր: Անոնք ծանր եւ դժուարակիր բեռներ կը դնեն մարդոց ուսերուն, մինչ իրենք նոյն բեռները կրելու նուազագոյն ճիգն իսկ չեն ըներ: Ինչ որ կ’ընեն, մարդոց երեւելուհամար կ’ընեն: Իրենց գրապանակները կը լայնցնեն եւ իրենց հագուստներուն ծոպերը կ’երկնցնեն: Ընթրիքներու ընթացքին պատուոյ տեղերը գրաւել կը սիրեն եւ ժողովարաններու մէջ՝ առաջինաթոռները: Կը սիրեն հրապարակներու վրայ մարդոցմէ բարեւներ ընդունիլ եւ «վարդապետ», այսինքն «ուսուցիչ» կոչուիլ: Բայց դուք ոեւէ մէկը «վարդապետ» մի՛ կոչէք, որովհետեւ դուք բոլորդեղբայրներ էք եւ մէկ ուսուցիչ ունիք: Երկրի վրայ ոեւէ մէկը «հայր» մի՛ կոչէք, որովհետեւ դուք մէկ Հայրունիք, որ երկինքի մէջ է: «Առաջնորդ» մի՛ կոչուիք, որովհետեւ ձեր միակ առաջնորդը Քրիստոսն է: Ձեր մէջէն մեծը թող ձեր սպասաւորը ըլլայ: Ով որ իր անձը կը բարձրացնէ՝ պիտի խոնարհի, եւ ով որիր անձը կը խոնարհեցնէ՝ պիտի բարձրանայ:

– Վա՜յ ձեզի, կեղծաւորնե՛ր, Օրէնքի ուսուցիչներ եւ Փարիսեցիներ, որ երկինքի արքայութիւնը կըփակէք մարդոց առջեւ. դուք չէք մտներ եւ թոյլ չէք տար նաեւ անոնց՝ որ կ’ուզեն մտնել:

Վա՜յ ձեզի, կեղծաւորնե՛ր, Օրէնքի ուսուցիչներ եւ Փարիսեցիներ, որ մէկ կողմէ այրիներուն տուներըիրենց ձեռքէն կը յափշտակէք, միւս կողմէ կեղծաւորութեամբ ձեր աղօթքը կ’երկարէք. ասոր համարաւելի խիստ դատապարտութիւն պիտի ընդունիք:

Վա՜յ ձեզի, կեղծաւորնե՛ր, Օրէնքի ուսուցիչներ եւ Փարիսեցիներ, որ մէկ կողմէ ծով ու ցամաք կը շրջիքմէկը նորահաւատ ընելու համար, իսկ երբ յաջողիք՝ զայն ձեզմէ կրկնապատիկ աւելի դժոխքիարժանի կ’ընէք:

Վա՜յ ձեզի, կո՛յր առաջնորդներ: Կ’ըսէք. «Ան որ տաճարին վրայ կ’երդնու՝ երդումը կատարելուպարտաւորութեան տակ չէ, բայց ան որ տաճարին ոսկիին վրայ կ’երդնու՝ պարտաւոր էկատարելու»: Յիմարնե՛ր, կոյրե՛ր, ո՞ր մէկը կարեւոր է, ոսկի՞ն թէ տաճարը, որ կը սրբագործէ ոսկին: Կամ կ’ըսէք. «Ան որ զոհարանին վրայ երդում կ’ընէ՝ երդումը կատարելու պարտաւորութեան տակչէ, բայց ան որ կ’երդնու զոհարանին դրուած զոհին վրայ՝ պարտաւոր է կատարելու»: ¹⁹Յիմարնե՛ր, կոյրե՛ր, ո՞ր մէկը աւելի կարեւոր է. զո՞հը թէ զոհարանը, որ կը սրբագործէ զոհը: Հետեւաբար, ով որկ’երդնու զոհարանին վրայ, կ’երդնու թէ՛ զոհարանին եւ թէ՛ հոն եղածներուն վրայ: Ով որ կ’երդնուտաճարին վրայ, կ’երդնու թէ՛ տաճարին եւ թէ՛ Աստուծոյ վրայ, որ հոն կը բնակի: Նոյնպէս, ով որկ’երդնու երկինքին վրայ, կ’երդնու թէ՛ Աստուծոյ գահին եւ թէ՛ Աստուծոյ վրայ, որ հոն կը նստի:

Վա՜յ ձեզի, կեղծաւորնե՛ր, Օրէնքի ուսուցիչներ եւ Փարիսեցիներ, որ անանուխին, սամիթին ուչամանին տասանորդը կու տաք եւ կ’անտեսէք Օրէնքին կարեւոր պարտաւորութիւնները, այսինքն՝արդարութիւնը, ողորմութիւնը եւ հաւատարմութիւնը: Ասոնք պէտք էր գործադրել, առանց միւսներըանտեսելու: Կո՛յր առաջնորդներ, մէկ կողմէ մժղուկը կը քամէք, միւս կողմէ սակայն ուղտը կը կլլէք:

Վա՜յ ձեզի, կեղծաւորնե՛ր, Օրէնքի ուսուցիչներ եւ Փարիսեցիներ, որ պնակին եւ գաւաթին արտաքինըկը մաքրէք, մինչ գիտէք թէ ներսիդին եղող ուտելիքն ու խմելիքը ի՜նչ յափշտակութեամբ եւաղտեղութեամբ ձեռք բերած էք: Կո՛յր Փարիսեցի, նախ գաւաթին եւ պնակին ներսը մաքրէ. այսպիսով դուրսն ալ մաքուր կ’ըլլայ:

Վա՜յ ձեզի, կեղծաւորնե՛ր, Օրէնքի ուսուցիչներ եւ Փարիսեցիներ, որ կը նմանիք կիրով ճերմկցուածգերեզմաններու, որոնք արտաքնապէս գեղեցիկ կ’երեւին, բայց ներքնապէս լեցուն են մեռելներուոսկորներով եւ ամէն տեսակի պղծութեամբ: Նոյնպէս էք դուք. արտաքնապէս մարդոց արդարկ’երեւիք, բայց ներքնապէս լեցուն էք կեղծաւորութեամբ եւ անօրէնութեամբ:

Վա՜յ ձեզի, կեղծաւորնե՛ր, Օրէնքի ուսուցիչներ եւ Փարիսեցիներ, որ մարգարէներու շիրիմները կըշինէք եւ արդարներուն գերեզմանները կը զարդարէք ու կ’ըսէք. «Եթէ մենք մեր հայրերունժամանակը ապրած ըլլայինք, մարգարէներու սպանութեան մասնակից պիտի չըլլայինք»: Ահաւասիկ դուք արդէն իսկ կը վկայէք թէ որդիներն էք անոնց, որոնք մարգարէները կոտորեցին: Գացէք ամբողջացուցէ՛ք ձեր հայրերուն կիսատ ձգած գործը: Օձե՛ր, իժերո՛ւ ծնունդներ, ինչպէ՞ս պիտիկարենաք փախուստ տալ դժոխքի դատապարտութենէն: Ահա ես ձեզի մարգարէներ, իմաստուններեւ Օրէնքի ուսուցիչներ պիտի ղրկեմ, դուք անոնցմէ ոմանք պիտի սպաննէք, ոմանք խաչէք, ուրիշներժողովարաններու մէջ պիտի գանակոծէք եւ հալածէք քաղաքէ քաղաք: Այսպիսով, բոլորարդարներուն սպանութեան մասնակից եղած պիտի ըլլաք, սկսեալ անմեղ Աբէլի արիւնէն մինչեւարիւնը Բարաքիայի որդիին՝ Զաքարիայի, որ սպաննեցիք տաճարին եւ զոհարանին մէջտեղ: Հաստատ գիտցէք, թէ այս բոլոր ոճիրներուն պատիժը պիտի կրէք:

– Երուսաղէ՜մ, Երուսաղէ՜մ, որ կը կոտորէիր մարգարէները եւ կը քարկոծէիր Աստուծոյ քեզի ղրկածմարդիկը. քանի՜ անգամ ուզեցի որդիներդ հաւաքել, ինչպէս հաւը իր ձագերը կը հաւաքէ թեւերունտակ, բայց դո՛ւք, Երուսաղէմի բնակիչներ, չուզեցիք: Ահա «աւերակ պիտի ըլլայ ձեր տունը»: Բայցկ’ըսեմ նաեւ, ա՛լ պիտի չտեսնէք զիս, մինչեւ որ ըսէք. «Օրհնեալ ըլլայ ան՝ որ կու գայ Տիրոջ անունով»:

ՆԱՄԱԿ ԿՈՂՈՍԱՑԻՆԵՐՈՒՆ 2:8-3:17

Զգո՛յշ եղէք, որ ոեւէ մէկը ձեր միտքը չգրաւէ իմաստասիրական տեսութիւններով եւ խաբեբայականսին խօսքերով, որոնք մարդկային աւանդութիւններու եւ բնութեան ոյժերուն վրայ կը հիմնուին եւ ո՛չթէ Յիսուս Քրիստոսի ճշմարիտ վարդապետութեան վրայ: Որովհետեւ մարդացած Քրիստոսի մէջ կըբնակի աստուածային բնութեան ամբողջ լիութիւնը: Եւ դուք ձեր կեանքին լիութիւնը գտաք՝միանալով անոր, որ գլուխն է ոգեղէն աշխարհի բոլոր իշխանութիւններուն ու պետութիւններուն: Հաւատքի ճամբով երբ Քրիստոսի միացաք, դուք ձեր մեղքերը թօթափեցիք եւ Քրիստոսիթլփատութեամբ ստացած եղաք սրտի թլփատութիւնը: Մկրտուելով՝ անոր հետ միասին թաղուեցաք, եւ անոր հետ ալ յարութիւն առիք, քանի հաւատացիք Աստուծոյ զօրութեան, որ զայն մեռելներէնյարուցանեց: Քրիստոսի հետ Աստուած ձե՛զ ալ կենդանացուց, քանի դուք հոգեւորապէս մեռած էիքձեր մեղքերուն պատճառով, որովհետեւ անթլփատ հեթանոսներ էիք: Այո՛, Աստուած ներեց մերբոլոր յանցանքները եւ իր իշխանութեամբ ջնջեց մեր օրինազանցութեան համար մեզի դէմարձակուած դատապարտութեան վճիռը, զայն խաչափայտին գամելով: Այսպիսով անիկազինաթափ ըրաւ ոգեղէն աշխարհի իշխանութիւններն ու պետութիւնները, յայտնապէսխայտառակելով ու պարտութեան մատնելով զանոնք Քրիստոսի ձեռքով, անոր յարութեան ատեն:

Կարեւորութիւն մի՛ տաք անոնց՝ որոնք ձեզ կը քննադատեն, թէ ինչո՛ւ չէք պահեր ուտելու եւ խմելու, տօնակատարութեանց, ամսամուտերու եւ Շաբաթ օրերու վերաբերող կանոնները. որովհետեւ այդբոլորը գալիք իրականութեանց շուքն են, իսկ իրականութիւնը Քրիստոսի մէջ է:

Չըլլա՛յ որ ոեւէ մէկը իր կեղծ խոնարհութեամբ, հրեշտակներուն ընծայուած պաշտամունքով եւզանազան տեսիլքներով ձեզ մոլորեցնէ եւ մրցանակէն զրկէ. որովհետեւ այդպիսիները մարդկայինհպարտութենէ տարուած են եւ կ’ուզեն իրենք զիրենք պարտադրել ձեզի: Անոնք կապ չունինԳլուխին՝ Քրիստոսի հետ. մինչդեռ մարմինը՝ Քրիստոսի եկեղեցին, իր բոլոր յօդերով ու կապերովԳլուխին կապուած ու միացած, անկէ՛ կ’առնէ իր աճումը՝ Աստուծոյ կամքին համաձայն:

Քանի Քրիստոսի հետ մեռաք եւ բնութեան ոյժերու տիրապետութենէն դուրս եկաք, ինչո՞ւ կըշարունակէք ապրիլ այնպէս՝ որպէս թէ ձեր կեանքը աշխարհէն կախում ունենար, եւ կը հնազանդիքմարդոց կողմէ տրուած պատուիրաններու, ինչպէս՝ «Մի՛ մօտենար, մի՛ ուտեր, մի՛ դպչիր»: Ասոնքբոլորն ալ բաներ են՝ որոնք գործածութեամբ կը փճանան: Այդպէս պատուիրողները իմաստունկրնան թուիլ՝ իրենց բարեպաշտական ինքնակամ արտայայտութիւններով, կեղծ խոնարհութեամբեւ անխնայ կերպով մարմինը ճնշելով, բայց այս բաները ոեւէ արժէք չունին եւ միայն մարմինըբաւարարելու կը ծառայեն:

Քանի որ յարութիւն առիք Քրիստոսի հետ, այսուհետեւ ձեր ուշադրութիւնը երկինք դարձուցէք, որովհետեւ հո՛ն է Քրիստոս, Հօր Աստուծոյ աջ կողմը նստած: Երկնաւոր բաներու մասին խորհեցէք եւո՛չ թէ երկրաւոր բաներու. որովհետեւ դուք այս աշխարհին համար մեռաք, որպէսզի Քրիստոսի հետմիասին ապրիք այն կեանքով՝ որ Աստուած վերապահած է ձեզի: Իսկ երբ Քրիստոս՝ ձեր կեանքը՝յայտնուի, այն ատեն դուք ալ փառքով պիտի յայտնուիք անոր հետ:

Հետեւաբար մեռցուցէ՛ք ձեր մէջ երկրաւոր ցանկութիւնները, այսինքն՝ ձեզմէ դուրս վանեցէքպոռնկութիւնը, պղծութիւնը, կիրքը, չար ցանկութիւնը եւ ագահութիւնը, ինչ որ կռապաշտութիւն է. որովհետեւ այդ բոլորը Աստուծոյ անհնազանդ մարդոց գործերն են, եւ Աստուած պիտի պատժէզանոնք: Նախապէս դո՛ւք ալ այդ բոլորը կ’ընէիք, երբ տակաւին այդ ցանկութիւններով կ’ապրէիք: Բայց հիմա ձեզմէ դուրս նետեցէք այդ բոլորը.- բարկութիւնը, զայրոյթը եւ չարութիւնը: Ձեր բերանէնոեւէ հայհոյութիւն կամ լկտի խօսք չլսուի: Սուտ մի՛ խօսիք իրարու: Մոռցէ՛ք ձեր հին կեանքն ունախկին գործերը, եւ նոր մարդ եղէք՝ ձեր Արարիչին պատկերին համաձայն նորոգուելով, որպէսզիկարենաք զինք ճանչնալ: Անգամ մը որ նորոգուեցաք, ա՛լ չկայ Հրեայ կամ հեթանոս, թլփատուածկամ անթլփատ, բարբարոս, վայրենի, ծառայ կամ ազատ. կայ միայն Քրիստոս, որ ամէն ինչ է եւբոլորին մէջ:

Հետեւաբար, իբրեւ Աստուծոյ կողմէ ընտրուած ու սրբուած եւ իր սէրը վայելող մարդիկ՝ գթասիրտեղէք. եղէք ողորմած, քաղցր, խոնարհ, հեզ եւ համբերատար: Իրարու հանդէպ հանդուրժող եղէք, եւներեցէք իրարու՝ երբ մէկդ միւսին դէմ տրտունջ մը ունենաք: Ինչպէս Աստուած Քրիստոսի միջոցաւներեց ձեզի, այնպէս ալ դուք իրարու ներեցէք: Եւ այս բոլորին վրայ՝ աւելի սէր ունեցէք, որովհետեւսէրը ամէն ինչի ամբողջացուցիչ շաղախն է: Ձեր սիրտերուն մէջ Քրիստոսի խաղաղութիւնը թողթագաւորէ, որովհետեւ Աստուած այդ խաղաղութեան կանչեց ձեզ՝ մէկ մարմինի մէջ, որ Քրիստոսիեկեղեցին է: Ուստի շնորհակալ եղէք Աստուծոյ:

Թող Քրիստոսի խօսքը ձեր մէջ բնակի իր ամբողջ հարստութեամբ, որպէսզի կատարեալիմաստութեամբ սորվեցնէք իրարու եւ իրար խրատէք, եւ սաղմոսներով, օրհնութիւններով ու հոգեւորերգերով ձեր սիրտերուն մէջ շնորհակալութեամբ զԱստուած օրհներգէք: Եւ ինչ որ ալ ընէք, խօսքովթէ գործով, միշտ Տէր Յիսուսի անունով ըրէք, անոր միջոցաւ գոհութիւն յայտնելով Հօր Աստուծոյ:

Matthew 22:34-23:39 

When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. Teacher, which commandments in the law is the greatest? He said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these commandments hang all the law and the prophets. 

Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question: What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he? They said to him, The son of David. He said to them, How is it then that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet? If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son? No one was able to give him an answer, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions. 

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat; therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practice what they teach. They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of others; but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them. They do all their deeds to be seen by others; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long. They love to have the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have people call them rabbi. But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all students. And call no one your father on earth, for you have one Father, the one in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant. All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted. 

“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. For you do not go in yourselves, and when others are going in, you stop them.  Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cross sea and land to make a single convert, and you make the new convert twice as much a child of hell as yourselves. 

“Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the sanctuary is bound by nothing, but whoever swears by the gold of the sanctuary is bound by the oath.’ You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the sanctuary that has made the gold sacred? And you say, ‘Whoever swears by the altar is bound by nothing, but whoever swears by the gift that is on the altar is bound by the oath.’ How blind you are! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred? So whoever swears by the altar, swears by it and by everything on it; and whoever swears by the sanctuary, swears by it and by the one who dwells in it; and whoever swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by the one who is seated upon it. 

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. It is these you ought to have practiced without neglecting the others. You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel! 

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may become clean. 

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside look beautiful, but inside they are full of the bones of the dead and of all kinds of filth. So you also on the outside look righteous to others, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. 

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous, and you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ Thus you testify against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the prophets.  Fill up, then, the measure of your ancestors. You snakes, you brood of vipers! How can you escape being sentenced to hell? Therefore I send you prophets, sages, and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town, so that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.  Truly I tell you, all this will come upon this generation.’ 

“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you, desolate. For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.’” 

Colossians 2:8-3:17 

See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily and you have come to fullness in him, who is the head of every ruler and authority. In him also you were circumcised with a spiritual circumcision, by putting off the body of the flesh in the circumcision of Christ; when you were buried with him in baptism, you were also raised with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead. And when you were dead in trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive together with him, when he forgave us all our trespasses, erasing the record that stood against us with its legal demands. He set this aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and made a public example of them, triumphing over them in it. 

Therefore do not let anyone condemn you in matters of food and drink or of observing festivals, new moons, or Sabbaths. These are only a shadow of what is to come, but the substance belongs to Christ. Do not let anyone disqualify you, insisting on self-abasement and worship of angels, dwelling on visions, puffed up without cause by a human way of thinking, and not holding fast to the head, from whom the whole body, nourished and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows with a growth that is from God. 

If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the universe, why do you live as if you still belonged to the world? Why do you submit to regulations, “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch”? All these regulations refer to things that perish with use; they are simply human commands and teachings. These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-imposed piety, humility, and severe treatment of the body, but they are of no value in checking self-indulgence. 

So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. 

Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). On account of these the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient. These are the ways you also once followed, when you were living that life. But now you must get rid of all such things—anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator. In that renewal there is no longer Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all! 

As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
