Biofuel Outreach

The Maryland Grain Producers and Maryland Soybean Board attended the 2022 Maryland Association of Counties (MACO) conference last week. Together advocating for biofuel use and infrastructure across the state.


Perdue Lothain Elevator

Perdue is holding a grower meeting on Wednesday, September 14th at 8:00 AM to discuss the Lothian Grain Elevator. The meeting will be held at the American Legion (6265 Brandywine Road, Hughesville, MD 20637). Biofuel Infrastructure Grants

USDA will award $100 million more in grant funding under its Higher Blends Infrastructure Incentive Program (HBIIP) for retailers seeking to upgrade or retrofit their facilities to accommodate higher blends of biofuels. Great news for corn farmers! More information can be found here.

Maryland Farm Bureau Comments on Poultry Transparency


Maryland Farm Bureau and American Farm Bureau are seeking more transparency on what poultry growers can expect when contracting with a poultry integrator. MDFB supports the proposed transparency rules such as financial disclosures and facility modification disclosures, and minimum stocking density in order for growers to make an informed decision before contracting with integrators. USDA Announces New Opportunities to Improve NM


From the Inflation Reduction Act, $19.5 billion in new conservation funding is being delivered. NRCS will target funding, increase program flexibilities, launch a new outreach campaign to promote NM economic benefits, in addition to expanding partnerships to develop nutrient management plans. Clark Touts Multi-Use Cover Crop


Rick Clark of Williamsport, Indiana quickly turned to no-till and cover crops after an inch of rain washed his topsoil away. Today, Clark has eliminated fertilizers and pesticides by matching specific cover crops and crop mixes to certain cash crops and timing cover crop termination to maximize biomass. Read more here

Existing MD Energy Administration Program Now Open to Farmers


MEA announced the opening of the Fiscal Year 23 Solar Canopy and Dual Use Technology Grant Program. This program provides funding to businesses, nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, state agencies, and local governments. For the first time, the program has been opened to farmers operating as sole proprietors. The program encourages the development of solar canopies over parking lots and parking garages. 2022 Farmers on the Rise Program


Horizon Farm Credit is hosting the second annual Farmers on the Rise award competition for young, beginning, small, minority, and veteran farmers. The program will offer up to ten $10,000 awards to the top ten contestants. The application is currently open and will close on September 30th. Apply here.

Watershed Implementation Plan a Work-In-Progress


Restoration goals for the Chesapeake Bay cannot be realized overnight; it takes years of coordination, cooperation, and compromise to induce the changes needed to positively affect water quality. Gurpal Toor secured an Environmental Protection Agency grant for $3.2 M to continue working under the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement to deliver research-based science to the Chesapeake Bay Program regarding agriculture and its contribution to water quality issues. Photosynthesis Hack Boosts Soybean Yield 20%


For the first time, RIPE researchers have proven that multigene bioengineering of photosynthesis increases the yield of a major food crop in field trials. A team at the University of Illinois has transgenically altered soybean plants to increase the efficiency of photosynthesis, resulting in greater yields without loss of quality. Learn more here.   

California's New Vehicle Requirements


By 2035 all new passenger cars, trucks, and SUVs sold in California will be zero emissions. The proposed Advanced Clean Cars II proposal would rapidly scale down light-duty passenger car, truck, and SUV emissions starting with the 2026 model year through 2035.  More information can be found here

$300 M in new Organic Transition


USDA is investing $300 M in a new Organic Transition Initiative that will help build new and better markets and streams of income for farmers and producers.  According to the USDA NASS, the number of non-certified organic farms actively transitioning to organic production dropped by nearly 71% since 2008.
