TCA women’s panel probes keys to success

Tenacity. Perseverance. Opportunism. Hard work.

There is no single path to success in the real estate and construction sectors, four female panellists asserted during a recent Women in Construction Week presentation, but rather diverse skill sets and smarts aligned in the pursuit of excellence.

The March 6 event was hosted by the Young Construction Leaders committee of the Toronto Construction Association.

Ontario breaks ground on $1.6-billion expansion at CAMH

Ontario Premier Doug Ford attended a ground-breaking ceremony on Friday and announced $1.6 billion for the design and construction of two new buildings at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto.

The new Secure Care and Recovery Building will provide a safe haven where some of the hospital’s most vulnerable patients can recover with dignity.

Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) awarded the project to PCL Partnerships to design, build and finance the CAMH Phase 1D Redevelopment project.

Changes needed to align immigration to labour needs

Changes are needed to Canada’s immigration system to ensure the construction sector can respond to growth, and deliver on key public-policy priorities, such as building new housing and greening infrastructure, says BuildForce Canada in its Immigration Report Update.

The publication, developed with input from an industry steering committee consisting of representatives from Canada’s Building Trades Unions, the Canadian Construction Association, the Canadian Home Builders’ Association, Merit Canada, and the Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada, examines the current state of immigration policies at the national level and across Canada’s provinces and territories.

McNaughton, Ontario’s former ‘Minister of Construction,’ wins COCA’s Hard Hat Award

Ontario’s former minister of labour, immigration, training and skills development Monte McNaughton has moved on to pursue a career in the private sector but he remembers his time in politics fondly, especially the relationships he built with the construction industry.

“One of the biggest compliments that I received in government, and I really did wear it as a patch of honour, from time to time, I wouldn’t be introduced as the Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, sometimes I was introduced as Ontario’s Minister of Construction,” said McNaughton.

Trade workers losing thousands to traffic

Based on just over an hour of driving each day, the average tradesperson in Canada will spend more than $8,000 travelling to work and jobsites. For those who travel longer distances between jobs, that cost could be much higher, reports Zego, a commercial motor insurance company founded in the U.K. that specializes in van insurance. The company conducted a poll of tradespeople to determine the average commute time for 10 high-demand trades in several countries around the world.

In Canada, they found that a 10-minute delay each day for traffic could add an average of more than $1,200 to driving costs.

Navigating Green Building Certifications and Surety Bonds in Construction Projects

There are complexities and risks associated with green building certifications, specifically LEED and their impact on surety bonds in construction projects. It outlines that contractors must possess deep knowledge and experience in sustainable construction practices, including sourcing local materials, specific handling, construction techniques, waste management, and recycling, to meet the stringent standards set forth by certification bodies like the USGBC and the CAGBC. These requirements add layers of complexity to projects, elevating the risk profile for contractors and necessitating a more intricate approach to risk management and claims response from surety companies.
