The Ohio Association of Teachers of Japanese, with support from the East Asian Studies Center, will hold its annual Fall Meeting on Saturday, November 12 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. via Zoom (registration required). Magara Maeda, University of Wisconsin-River Falls, will present "Proficiency-Based Design: How to Build Assessments and Activities Fostering the Three Modes of Communication."
Abstract: Students understand grammar, do their homework, and score well on grammar-based tests, but does this really mean that students are developing proficiency? This workshop aims to develop an understanding of proficiency-oriented instruction. Strategies to develop/re-design learning tasks and assessments fostering the three modes of communication (Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational) through a university-level sample unit of instruction will be discussed. Applying the principles of backward design, participants will learn how to plan meaningful learning experiences in the target language. The workshop will be conducted in Japanese.
