Funds from HSAs, FSAs, and HRAs can be used for health services, including mental health services. That’s especially important since suicide rates in the United States are steadily rising, particularly among youth, people of color, and rural communities.

Kentucky's statistics reflect this trend, with above-average rates, notably through firearm use. Contributing factors include mental health challenges, substance abuse, and socioeconomic stressors.

Recognizing warning signs is crucial, and the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline provides immediate support. However, accessing mental health care in Kentucky, especially in rural areas, can be challenging secondary to provider shortages and insurance limitations.

Medicaid expansion has shown promise in reducing suicide rates, highlighting the necessity of maintaining expanded services. Additionally, minority populations face more barriers to mental health care.

To combat this crisis, advocating for more resources, increasing provider accessibility, expanding telemedicine, and ensuring equitable coverage are crucial steps toward addressing Kentucky's rising suicide rates and promoting mental well-being for all residents.

We love sharing the work our amazing community partners are doing. Last month, our partners at the North Central Kentucky Area Health Education Center (AHEC) took part in a resource fair at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Carrollton, where they shared TAI's materials on health care coverage with those in the Spanish-speaking community.

TAI materials are available online in English, Spanish, Somali, and French.

The Asclepius Initiative is also part of Kroger’s Community Rewards program. Select TAI as the charity of choice and a portion of the receipt will be donated to TAI each time the Kroger Plus Card is used. Signing up is quick and only has to be done once.

1. Go to KrogerCommunityRewards.com

2. Sign into using current login information or the number on the back of the card

3. Select TAI as the organization: search for us by name or by using our code, DG163
