THE CHAPELINE

From Rev. Brock Patterson

“Sorrow or Anger?”

Surveying the damage at the parsonage and the Chapel (both minimal) following Hurricane Ian, I am reminded of the power of emotional responses. The week following the Hurricane, I spoke with people who were grateful that more damage didn’t occur. Now that it’s two weeks following the storm, I’ve encountered a few people whose patience has worn out and they are struggling to take the high road with contractors, service providers, owner associations, and similar. Me? I’ve taken the low road more often than I will admit (especially yesterday while talking to the Chapel's internet service provider), but I have taken the high road plenty of times as well.

I’d like to mention one, post-hurricane situation, and seek your opinion. Pippa (my Yorkie Terrier) and I were driving our pickup truck along Gulf of Mexico Drive when an approaching compact vehicle turned left into our lane, directly in front of me and Pippa. I hit the brakes, certain that we were going to tattoo the car. Fortunately, we stopped in time, with tries screeching and smoke arising from our tires. The vehicle completed its’ turn and the driver appeared to be completely oblivious that they barely escaped a premature meeting with St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. I laid into my horn for at least 10 seconds, trying to tell the driver I was displeased with their driving. Apparently, he never saw or heard me, even after my obnoxious horn-blowing.

Boy Howdy, I was upset. My heart was racing, and my mouth was probably issuing some expletives that I’ll need to confess to one of my colleagues. Poor, poor, Pippa, who had been in the passenger seat next to me prior to the incident, was now on the floorboard. As I picked her up and put her back onto the front seat, she gave me an evil side-eye look and growled, as if the whole event was my fault.

Since this brief encounter with the unidentified driver, I have settled down…but not much. I feel sorry for the driver because if he continues driving like that, he’s going to get himself hurt. But I’m also angry with the driver because if he continues driving like that, he could hurt someone else. Which emotion is correct, sorrow or anger? Which is the high road? Sometimes, it’s not so easy to determine.

However, one thing is for sure: I reacted poorly when I leaned on my horn, hollering, and screaming as Pippa was sent to the floor. Keeping control over our emotions is very difficult, especially having narrowly missed a recent disaster with Hurricane Ian. It’s important to remember to be patient with everyone, especially the authorities, contractors, service providers, and neighborhood associations, who are all trying to help. They aren’t compensated for our (yours and mine) emotional outbursts, and like us, they are exhausted.

Remember to love your neighbor, including the temporary workers, full-time maintenance people, and especially, those drivers who are lost in the chaos!

God Bless.

Brock

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS

This Saturday, October 22nd

9 to 11 a.m.

The Revival Team and Pastor Brock are inviting all Chapel members and everyone who desires to have a blessing placed on their favorite buddy, furry or otherwise, to join in celebrating our favorite pals. Animals of all sizes, shapes, furry or not so furry, cute, pretty, happy, big, little, and in between (maybe a reptile or two) will be blessed. Each animal will receive a gift and a certificate. Mark your calendar for October 22, 2022, 9-11:00 a.m. at the fountain in the Chapel courtyard.  Help spread the word!

We are collecting unopened dog and cat food to assist Hurricane Ian relief efforts, so please bring what you can on October 22!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

"Support the Girls!"

How you can help:

1.) Wear pink to the Chapel when you attend worship on Sunday mornings during October.

2.) Collect women's bras (new and gently used, all sizes) and bring them to the Chapel. They will be distributed locally to women in need.

Yes, this is important. Bras are often expensive. Therefore, these are very difficult items for people in need to obtain. Hurricane Ian wasn't necessary to remind us to help those in need. Both adult and children's sizes are needed, so please consider purchasing a new bra or two and bringing them to the Chapel. We will make sure they get to the right folks for distribution.

As always, we appreciate your generosity!

Thanks, your Charitable Outreach Committee

Food Pantries Need MORE!

Our local food pantries are desperate for all types of non-perishable food.  Bring what you can to the Chapel and we will make sure it gets to the proper place. Every little bit helps! Remember, one equals one meal. Thank you!

(All items must be new, unopened, and in sealed packages.)

A HUGE "Thank you" to all who have donated to this very worthwhile cause.  We filled two bins this past week and Jimmy (the driver from the Food Bank) was so excited with the amount and type of goods we were donating!  He said there is currently SO much need. Let's keep it going!
